Marta was predeceased by her sisters Violet, Nelly, Mary, and brother Otto. Marta is survived by her brother Bruno and his wife Ester.
Marta was born in the village of Hochfeld, Manitoba October 9, 1926. The family moved to Winnipeg where Marta met and fell in love with Harry Gelhorn. They were married March 16, 1946. Marta lost Harry due to a work place accident after twenty-one years of happiness and having two sons together. Having to provide for her two sons, Marta returned to Red River College to further her education and went on to work for the DOT at the Winnipeg International Airport.
Marta met her second love David Martin and they were married on November 20, 1971. Dave and Marta blended their families together, traveled together and enjoyed their winter home in Texas. In 1992 after twenty-one years of marriage, David lost his battle to Alzheimer disease. Marta was a devout Christian and always said it was her faith that helped her through tough times.
Martha loved to travel, especially her trip to the Holy Land with her two sisters. They enjoyed reliving their adventure over and over. Marta lived a full life, loved to laugh and was eager to help others.
The family thanks all the staff at Middlechurch Nursing Home for the passionate care they gave mom these past years.
One of mom's favourite verses:

Trust in the Lord with all your Heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

  • Auntie has been in my life since day one as Uncle Harry was my Godfather. When I was a child I would sometimes spend a day or two over at their house. I remember once when I was over there she sewed me two very pretty little sundresses which I treasured. When I was much older she taught me how to knit those famous dishcloths of hers. She was always full of encouragement. Auntie was a woman of many talents....a wonderful cook, baker (Bierocks...mmm), gardener, and homemaker. But her special talent was with people. Whenever we got together she never failed to to say how Duane and Dwight and their families were doing...with so much pride and love. When she lost Uncle Harry I had never seen her look so lost. Through her strong faith she had the courage to carry on with so much determination. To me she was a true warrior. During that challenging time she spoke of how her sons worked part time and helped out at home. They were a team. Years later Auntie married my Uncle Dave who was such a gentle and kind man. Both he and Auntie had very strong family values. It was a good match for both of them. Auntie cared for Uncle Harry after his accident and Uncle Dave when he was struck down with Lou Gehrig's Disease. She stood by both her husbands without complaint....only with complete love and devotion. Auntie was a true woman of substance. Anyone who was her family or friend was very fortunate to have her in their life. I loved her unconditionally... to me she was perfect. Thank you for having me in your life Auntie....and making time to see me without fail whenever I visited my dad in Winnipeg. When I think of you I see that incredible smile and twinkle in your eyes....you will always be in my heart. To Duane, Dwight and family: Thinking of you all as you celebrate Auntie's remarkable life. - Posted by: Angela Martin (Niece/Friend) on: Nov 19, 2022

  • Condolences to the Gelhorn and Martin Families. Aunty Martha was a beautiful lady and always had the biggest smile. Even though our families had drifted apart I often though of her. She was such a go getter . R.I.P. Aunty. - Posted by: Debra Morris (Isaak) (Neice) on: Nov 19, 2022

  • I first met Aunty Marta at my wedding shower in 1970. Her warmth, kindness and fantastic sense of humour (I'll never forget those pot holders she gave me) helped me feel at ease meeting Gary's family members, many for the first time on that day. From that moment on, Aunty Marta was my absolute favourite. She was so much fun to be around and visiting her was a real treat. She was the ultimate hostess and we always left full of her delicious cooking and baking and lots of stories from the past. Aunty Marta was an elegant lady with a sweet heart and kind soul. She was loved beyond words. "Gone are the days we used to share, But in our hearts, you are always there. You left us beautiful memories to treasure, And you are missed beyond measure." Our deepest condolences to all the family. With all our Love, Gary & Jo-Anne Martin - Posted by: Gary and Jo Martin (Nephew and Niece) on: Nov 19, 2022
