DONALD CHARLES BYERS
1928 – 2022

On the morning of November 15, 2022, Donald (Don) passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years old.
Don was predeceased by his mother Minnie Stewart, Diane, his beautiful wife of 43 years, and loving daughter Patricia Woods.
Left to miss Don is his daughter, Lynda Halloran (Buck) of Arizona, step-daughters, Debra Tomiski (Barry) of Winnipeg and Delene Emick (Chris) of Virginia. Grandpa Don's stories and jokes will be missed by nine adult grandchildren and five great-grand-children, spread throughout Canada and the USA.
Don was born and raised in Winnipeg. He was an electrician by trade, working at Mauring Electric before becoming a commercial traveller for Square D, with northern Saskatchewan as his first territory. Don said that soon it became, "Don is coming," not the Square D salesman. "I stood very tall in that society, the biggest thing was "respect." Don's charismatic personality was a big part of his success in business and the way he lived his life, making many lifelong friends.
Don was always quick to travel in his powerful cars with Diane at his side, driving many miles to help or visit friends, daughters and grandchildren or any adventure they found along the way. Each trip was packed with their travel mugs, egg salad sandwiches and usually a cat in the backseat. The highlights of Don's travelling days were their trips to Vegas and a cruise to the Panama Canal, a lifelong dream come true.
Don and Diane moved to Ditch Lake after his retirement and immersed themselves in the lake community. Their cabin, One for the Ditch, was host to all family and friends and Don's talent for winemaking resulted in many Happy Hours with the neighbours. Don fished, curled, was Chair on various boards, was a BBQ master for Diane's Fine Dining, ran his own electrical business and played Bridge with the "young ladies" and Pastor Mark. What he was most excited about was singing in the choir at the Erickson Lutheran Church. He loved feeling like he made a difference in the lives of the people the choir sang to.
Don and Diane returned to Winnipeg in their final years. Unfortunately, Don faced many challenges in the loss of his wife and daughter, the isolation of Covid and progressing dementia. Through all of this, Don still retained his sharp wit and spontaneous sense of humour right to the very end.
We give thanks to the staff at 555 Ellice and the home care workers that showed daily compassion and took such good care of Don, especially Candace.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. A reception celebrating both Don and Diane will follow immediately after at Chapel Lawn Reception Centre.
