September 13, 1932 - November 21, 2022

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, or a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.
Our Dad realized the truth of this very early on. He never waited to live a full and rewarding life. Dad began his career in 1953 with the City of Winnipeg Fire Department. He spent many years in busy stations never looking for the easy way out. He loved his career and took great pride in his work. Dad rose to the rank of District Chief retiring after 38 years of service. He and Mom started their next phase in life as snowbirds. They spent 17 happy years in Mesa Arizona where they made many happy memories with a wonderful circle of friends.
Our Dad always felt it was his duty to be the protector and provider for his family. He never shirked his responsibility and often worked two jobs to ensure his family would never go without. Dad loved the outdoors spending many years golfing, hunting and fishing. They built a cottage at Long Lake thoroughly enjoying summers on trikes and winters snowmobiling.
Every fall for over 50 years Dad would head to his favourite hunting spot in Hartney, Manitoba. Thanks go out to his special friends Teddy and Darlene Dooley and their family who welcomed him and in later years Mom on to their land and into their home and hearts. Dad has requested that Hartney be his final resting place.
Dad was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Betty Ann. His brothers, Don and Ray; and his sister Yvonne. He was also predeceased by his special nephew Ron Martin. Dad is survived by his daughter Sandra, husband Terry, daughter Donna; grandchildren, Cam, wife Karina, Trevor, Blair, wife Kristin, Melonie, husband Buck and Dad's very special little fur friend Ozzy. Surviving also are great-grandchildren, Brock, Ruby, Lane, Aiden, Decklin, Henry and Maddox.

We love you Dad.
You have left a deep hole in our
hearts and you will be greatly missed.

Thank you to the Paramedics who assisted dad with gentleness and care when he was in so much pain. Also our sincere thanks to Dr. Bruchell at St. Boniface Hospital, Dr. Debroni and the wonderful and caring nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Peter Bialy for the wonderful care he gave Dad over the years.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I first got to know Vern when I was a snowbird at Val Vista Village RV resort in Mesa Arizona. I always had a great admiration for Vern and we had a lot of laughs while shooting pool at the Resort. We were paired together at snooker tournaments and won several events together. His wife Betty was always cordial when I visited them at their Park model at the resort. Although I was a D/Sgt. with Winnipeg Police Service I never met Vern prior to meeting up with him in Mesa Arizona where I spent 20 winters as a snowbird. Vern always had a great and even attitude and we had respect for each other. RIP Vernon and let the angels guide you on your next journey. - Posted by: Joe Lucki (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2022

  • Our sincerest condolences to the Martin Family. Mr and Mrs Martin were neighbours and friends for over 30 years and have been a part of the Sylvester family as neighbours and friends for well over 60 years. We will miss him and cherish our memories of all the fun times, great talks and words of wisdom he shared with all of us. He was a man of integrity and his love for his job, his family and friends was beyond most. We will miss him but his memory will always be a part of the landscape of our neighbourhood. Love Dan and Pat. - Posted by: Dan and Pat Sylvester (Friend and Neighbour ) on: Nov 27, 2022

  • Donna and Sandra we are so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I remember both your parents very well from the old neighborhood. They were both wonderful people. ❤ - Posted by: Sharon and Martin Brudy (Friends) on: Nov 26, 2022

  • So many fond memories of time spent at the Martin home, Vern and Betty Ann made it the "it" place to hang out at. Vern with his wit and good looks no doubt would have made it on a fire fighters calendar page if they had such a thing in the 60s! Vern was just a gem. He enjoyed life fully and leaves a big void in so many hearts. Thinking of you Sandy and Donna - Posted by: Beverly Mitchelson (Friend) on: Nov 26, 2022
