GRAY: Shirley Isabelle Gray (nee Fox), widow of the late Donald Jerome Gray, passed away at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon on November 26. She is survived by two daughters, Shauna Gray and partner Guillermo Magat (Lake Simcoe, ON), Barbara Gray (Winnipeg), three grandsons Codey Gray (Minnedosa), Brayden Gray (Winnipeg), and Diego Gray Magat (Waterloo, ON), one brother, Bryan Fox (Portage), sister-in-law and long time friend Marg Fox-Beler (Fort Qu'appelle, SK), sister-in-law Pat Allen (Winnipeg), and special friends Mimi, Carma, Gayle, Cecil and Linda and Theo and Lettie. Shirley was born September 10, 1940 to Bill and Emma Fox of Portage. She married Don in 1964. Don and Shirley bought a Country Style Donuts franchise at 10th and Victoria Ave in 1978. The business closed in 1998 after a successful run of 20 years and the Grays retired. You could always find her in the gardens and in winter cross-stitching and watching curling on TV. Many happy hours were spent with the grandsons, with grandpa teaching the boys how to play cards, ride bikes, and shoot a gun safely and grandma had them in the gardens. Predeceased by her parents Bill in 1950, Emma in 1964, daughter in infancy Katherine Dawn 1968, brother Lorne in 1970, and husband Don in 2016. They were married 50 years. It is Shirley's request that there will be no formal funeral services.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Friends from long ago, both native Portage la Prairie transplants. Many a cup of coffee shared. Always sad to say goodbye to a friend. - Posted by: Annabelle(Anne) Ringash (friend) on: Dec 08, 2022

  • I worked for Shirley and Don at the donut shop in the 80’s. We knew of each other through another family member. I was trying to make a little extra money to fund student teaching in Europe. They were kind enough to hire me. I’ll never forget that kindness. I watched and learned as Shirley mingled with all the regulars. She taught me also to have high expectations and work hard. Sending our deepest sympathy Shauna and Barb and families. Over the years I saw your mom and dad when they visited my cousin. You and your families meant the world to her. She was very proud of you. May you find comfort and peace in the good memories. Thinking of you and keeping you close in prayer. Laurie - Posted by: Laurie Gatzke (Friend) on: Dec 04, 2022
