LILLIAN GRACE UNA GIBSON (HOLM)
September 25, 1935 - December 6, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our sister, Mom, Amma, and friend, Lillian Gibson. She's left to join Dad, who has been patiently waiting for the past 2 1/2 years.
This prairie girl was born in Gimli, Manitoba, to Florence Jacobson and Otto Holm. She is the stepdaughter to Omar Plouffe and sister to Milton and Gordon. Lil grew up in Fort Garry, where she attended Bishop Grandin School and met the love of her life, Vincent Gibson. Married for 64 years, together they had three children, Ingrid (Rick), Wes, Lorna (Errol), six granddaughters, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Lil lived an incredibly full life. She was the first non-Scot member of the Heather Belle Pipeband. She played baseball for the senior Tigerettes team, which was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Lil worked at HBC switchboard for 15 years and later in the Art department at the UofM bookstore. She was an active member of RKCC; convening, coaching baseball and ringette, and helping with the flying-M track club. She was a Girl Guide leader and member of the Trefoil Guild and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Lil was an artist with the ability to capture the beauty of the world through watercolour. She was an MTC ticket holder for 38 years, attended numerous rainbow stage performances, and could be found enjoying any live music around Manitoba. Lil traveled extensively with Vince, the family, and her art crew. One of her favourite spots will always be Gibby's Corner.
Lil left a legacy of love.
Special thanks for the support from her friends and relatives, Dr. Permack and team, Dr. Scott-Herridge, the fantastic staff of Oz Loving Care, and Southeast PCH.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lil's memory can be made to the Firefighters Burn Fund or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Don't cry because it is over,
smile because it happened.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • I am presently going through boxes of my fathers after his passing earlier this year. In an envelope were a series of cards, some tagged "from an original watercolor by Lil Gibson", others not but the name Lil Gibson appears on them. The last one I opened had a hand written note inside the card from Lil and Gibb offering condolences to my Dad and us children on the passing of my mother Margaret Stamp (Haas). While it has been 64 years since I left Gimli, I still have vivid memories of this town it seems in reading this note that those memories seem to transcend time for those who were lucky enough to have lived there. Condolences to the family and thank you for the memory. - Posted by: Norman Stamp (Son of Someone who knew her) on: Nov 10, 2024

  • My condolences to Lil's family. My connection with Lil was at Brushworks art exhibit at St Paul's church. We admired each other's work and remember discussing with her the difficulty of knowing how to price our paintings. Fond memories. - Posted by: Tom Jones (Friend in art) on: Aug 25, 2023

  • Lil and Vince were long time friends of our family. Mom and dad sure appreciated their friendship. Dad often sought out the refuge of their company when police work and other things in his life became overbearing. Lil always had an open door. I knew I could pop in pretty much any time myself. So kind. So warm. I used to deliver phone books with Mrs Gibson and always liked the extra cash in my pocket when I was younger. Vince and Lil offered their cabin to my family for a few days and boy was that ever nice! An empty place will now be in my heart until I meet them both in heaven. Take care, Ingrid, Lorna and Wes. You are loved. Dory Cameron (aka Dorothy Schmidt). - Posted by: Dorothy Schmidt (Friend) on: Feb 04, 2023

  • It is with great sadness that I discovered this obituary. My deepest condolences to Lorna, Wes, Ingrid and families. Lil was a wonderful and valued part of my early years and is central to the best of my memories growing up. Always with a smile and a core kindness, we remember the many years of her coaching, organizing, travelling with teams and delivering phone books. I only learned years later how accomplished she became as an artist. Lil was truly a lady of may talents. Her example of being a solid person will always be with me. I feel you now can be together with Gibby again, and the heavens will be the richer with your spirit. Love you and hope you can see from above how valued you are to so many. Many thanks, and again, my deepest condolences to all the family. With love, Pat Biglow-Lecomte - Posted by: Pat Biglow-Lecomte (Friend) on: Jan 02, 2023

  • My sincere condolences on the passing of your mom. She was a presence in my life, through her friendship with my mom, for most of my life. She will personally be remembered as my girl guide leader but also for always sharing a kind word and hopeful thought through her letters and her beautiful paintings. The world is a better place for having had a spirit like Lil in it. - Posted by: Angela Heck (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2022

  • I had the honour of knowing Lil through my mom. She and my mom were lifelong friends. It is so nice to think they are reunited and able to see each other again. I will always remember Lillian’s beautiful smile and her kind soul. I will also think of her often as I too enjoy her artwork that I am fortunate enough to possess. • She was my mentor! She taught me so much from my teen years and up. I will be forever grateful to her and Gib how they treated me. Beautiful people who loved life and people. Please let me know when her celebration of life would be as I would love to be there. - Posted by: Irene Friesen (Long time friend) on: Dec 12, 2022

  • Lil and I met years ago when playing baseball and years later we met again from across the street corner at Spruce Bay. We had many fun times with our families enjoying fishing, auction sales, movies at Gimli Theatre , Thanksgiving dinners, birthdays, bonfires, art shows, and family events, together. She was a very caring, thoughtful and kind dear friend, who was always there for us when we needed a lift or a delicious treat from her heart. She was a wonderful person, with a great smile and she was always lots of fun. She was a gem. We recently received many beautiful art cards that she created and will look forward to sending them to others to share the beauty. We miss her very much but know she is at peace and reunited with Gibby. - Posted by: Jean Franz, Donna and Frank, Kelly and Dennis. (Friends across from Gibby's Corner) on: Dec 11, 2022
