FRIESEN: Len passed away peacefully while in care at Virden Health Centre, Virden, Manitoba Monday, December 12, 2022. The same facility as his birth July 15th, 1955. Len's home was on the farm in Griswold MB, and he received his education at Oak Lake Elementary and Virden High School. He was always a farmer at heart, and although he worked at a few jobs off the farm, he always returned to his roots, to farm with his father, Jake. Len remained a bachelor and preferred the quiet solitude of the farm and caring for his mother, Anne, in her later years. Len enjoyed staying busy on the farm, tending to the garden, his cattle and of course a small herd of cats. His faithful dog Duke was also by his side for many years. He enjoyed taking his nieces out to the barnyard when they were little, giving them tractor rides and playing on the round bales. One of those nieces would always cajole him into a game of catch on the front lawn, to which he always obliged. Len stayed current with news and events of all things related to agriculture, whether it was local, provincial or nationwide. Len kept his mind sharp with his love of crossword puzzles and spent many hours listening to the local Swap n' Shop, which was another favorite past time. Len always enjoyed music, and especially loved listening to the Thiessen brothers - Prairie Joe. One of these brothers, Russell and his family, enjoyed their many hours spent with Len. He became a part of their family and joined them for fishing, hockey games, farming, holiday dinners and birthdays. After a delicious meal and the coffee pot was drained Len was always keen for a game of Monopoly, Chess or Crokinole and his jokes kept the kids laughing and trying to come up with their own. Len was patient with (his) kids and even let the youngest put play makeup on him. Leonard was always willing to help with chores and check in on things whenever the need arose. He will be greatly missed by Anna, Emily, Rebekah, David and Victoria Thiessen. Len was predeceased by his father, Jacob (1986) and mother, Anne (2017). He is survived by his older brother, August (Phylis) of Swan River, MB; niece Kristina (Julia and Sydney) of Swan River, MB; niece Denean of High River, AB; as well as dear and faithful friends, Russell (Patti) Thiessen of Griswold, MB. The graveside funeral service will be held at Griswold Cemetery, Griswold, Manitoba Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served at Griswold Community Hall following the service. For those who so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Mennonite Central Committee in memory of Leonard.
