DALE YEO
November 24, 1941 – December 10, 2022

It is with great sadness that his family announces the sudden passing of their Dad/Grandfather, Dale Yeo, on December 10, 2022, at his home in Stonewall, Manitoba. A lifelong and passionate fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is now cheering on his team from Heaven. Mom will be amused, and certainly not surprised.
Gordon Dale Yeo was born in Winnipeg on November 24, 1941. He received his public school education at Mulvey and Gordon Bell Schools, where the influence of some excellent educators led him to the vocation of teaching. After high school, Dale pursued post-secondary studies in History, English and Education at United College and the University of Manitoba. It was while a student at United that he met and subsequently married Rosemarie Thiele from Dauphin, Manitoba in 1961. It was the beginning of a beautiful partnership, which lasted almost 60 years.
In 1962 the couple, along with baby son, packed up their few belongings and moved to Roblin, Manitoba where Dale's 35-year teaching career would begin. "Mr. Yeo", as he was known to hundreds of students over the years, became a master teacher, professional and committed to his craft. He and Rosemarie fell in love with their new community and for more than 50 years were an integral part of it. Even while juggling a busy work life as a teacher and vice-principal at Roblin Collegiate Institute / Goose Lake High School, and being a wonderful father to his five children, Dale volunteered thousands of hours over many years to several community endeavours such as the Roblin Credit Union, Community Foundation, Lions Club, Trans-Canada Trail, Meals on Wheels, Roblin Centennial Committee, and construction of a new community centre. He served as Deputy Mayor of Roblin and enjoyed reading to the residents of Crocus Court seniors home. He and Rosemarie were members of Sacred Heart Parish, with a deep and abiding faith which helped guide their lives.
In 2017 the two made the difficult decision to leave Roblin to be nearer to family and to have closer access to necessary medical services. They relocated to Stonewall, taking up residence at Lion's Manor where they quickly made many new friends and became part of that community.
Dale was predeceased by his beloved Rosemarie in 2020, parents, Frank (1969) and Lillian (2001), and infant brother Ross (1948). He is survived by sons, David (Laurel), Douglas (Wei Li), Robert (Lindy), Allen, and daughter Donna (Curtis). He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Kelly (Spencer), Jamie and Scott Yeo; Jacynthe Yeo; Joshua and Jennifer Yaschyshyn; and Elizabeth and William Yeo. Also left to mourn in London, England is Clayton (Arlette) Yeo, his brother for whom Dale had such great affection, pride and respect. The Thiele in-laws who were family to Dale for six decades, Tina Arbez, many nieces and nephews along with former colleagues and his many friends, acutely feel this terrible loss as well.
A funeral service will be held on December 17, 2:00 p.m., at Christ the King Church (325 2nd St. E, Stonewall). A brief reception will follow in the auditorium at Quarry Park Heritage Arts Centre (166 Main Street, Stonewall).
Donations in Dale's memory can be made to the Roblin and District Community Foundation (Box 1599, Roblin, MB R0L 1P0), Something Beautiful (307 Main Street, Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0), or the Terry Fox Foundation (terryfox.org or 1-888-836-9786).
His positive outlook, undiminished zest for life, genuine interest in others, and sense of responsibility as a parent and citizen were rare qualities characteristic of Dale. How blessed we were.

We love and miss you so very much, Dad.

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • Our family was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Dale. He and Rose were close friends of our parents engaging in many social events together. As a member of the Lions Club, Dale was instrumental in getting our dad a motorized scooter when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Dale and mom attended school board meetings in Grandview, often travelling together. As a colleague in the school board, mom had tremendous respect for Dale and his vision for education for the students in Roblin and district. Dale was either a teacher or an administrator for the five us at Goose Lake High where he left a lasting impression on each of us. He was a man who earned a great deal of respect but gave out even more to everyone he encountered. Our condolences to the Yeo family. Roblin has lost a legend. • Mr. Yeo was just the nicest man and a great teacher. He and Mrs. Yeo were good friends of Mom and Dad for decades. Mr. Yeo helped Dad in so many ways after Mom passed away. Dropping by for visits, helping take the recycling downtown, helping with Dad's garage sale when the house was sold - I probably don't know the half of it. How many other people did he help like that, wherever he went? My condolences to the whole family on your loss. Dad passes his thoughts and prayers to you as well. He counted Dale as a dear friend and colleague. - Posted by: Eric Friesen (Student) on: Dec 19, 2022

  • I was so sad to hear the passing of Mr. Yeo. He was a huge part in our lives as parents were friends with the yeos. Mr Yeo and I always had our Bomber/Rider rivalry. He read my brothers eulogy at his memorial as I couldn't be there. English was always my favorite subject. I had the pleasure of having him for grade 9 English. He ways expected a lot from me. When I leave the house saying me and.. are going downtown He was quick to call me back to correct sentence. Once I purposely messed up one word on a spelling test and it landed me I special Ed for a month. Mr Yeo was like a grandfather to my kids as well. He would often stop by to hold them. His daughter Donna had a kid that was the same age as my daughter so often they would have play dates. The memories go on and on. Thanks Mr. Yeo for everything. You will truly be missed. Condolences to all his children and grandbabies. Hugs for all! Kanene Mutch - Posted by: Kanene Mutch (Student, friend) on: Dec 17, 2022

Take care and God bless. - Posted by: Bev Patenaude (Kirychuk) (Friend of Family) on: Dec 17, 2022

  • Denise and I would like to pass on our condolences to David, Douglas, Robert, Donna, Allen and all their families. They were truly blessed to have such a wonderful man as a role model, sounding board, mentor, and of course father. Dale (Mr.Yeo) was a wonderful, kind man who always treated us like family, we were just some of the strange baggage that David picked up in University. We were welcomed into their home and Mr. And Mrs. Yeo always were quick to tell us how proud they were of all their children and grand children. Unfortunately we can not make it to Dales celebration of life but our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. - Posted by: James and Denise Morton (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2022

  • I'm so sorry to hear of Dale's passing. He devoted his life to so many aspects of Roblin and was a walking encyclopedia of historical knowledge. I was fortunate to be his student teacher in the early 90's at Goose Lake High. I learned much from Dale and found him to be the epitome of what a teacher should be like. Best wishes to his children and loved ones in this time of sorrow. Take care. - Posted by: Kirk Wilson (Friend/Student Teacher) on: Dec 16, 2022

  • I do remember "Mr. Yeo", who in his first year of teaching taught me English when I was in grade 10. One of my favourite memories was his first day, when our class wondered who the "kid in the suit" was when he opened the door. He soon told us who he was, and left us in no doubt that he was in charge. Over the years, I came to know him as a friend of my father's and a frequent coffee drinker at the 50 and Over Club. I also remember his eulogy for Dad (Allan Martin) and what a wonderful tribute it was. My sympathy to you all. I know you will miss him greatly. - Posted by: Janice Hopkins (former student) on: Dec 15, 2022

  • What I say to you will not be a big surprise, Mr. Yeo was the most amazing teacher and person. He established in many of us as his students a work ethic and a love for learning which many of us, myself included, did not have before. Mr. Yeo always had time to listen and talk to you and make you feel you were important. I remember sitting around our kitchen table after our father passed away with him and our family as he prepared to write Dad’s eulogy. He showed us such compassion while at the same time drawing from us all the good times we had with our parents. I remember seeing him walk to coffee time at the drop-in centre in Roblin cleaning up the streets as he went along. The world has lost a tremendous individual, To your family I express my deepest sympathy, we grieve with you. - Posted by: Lynne Stewart (Martin) (Former student and friend) on: Dec 15, 2022

  • So sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. I was at a gathering on Saturday when we learned the sad news. Several of us were former students of your Dad’s and I can tell you that a few eyes teared up and then the “Remember whens…” started. So sorry for your loss. We called him Dale now but he will always be “Mr. Yeo”, a loved and respected gentleman. - Posted by: Mary Keast (Friend/Former Student ) on: Dec 15, 2022

  • I am friend of the family. I grew up as neighbors with Mr. Yeo and his kids. It was an immense privilege to have known him and his family and I treasure the memories I have with him. I found him to be a compassionate, humble, and loving father who will be remembered along his loving wife who passed away a couple of years ago.
