JACOB EDWIN WIEBE
January 16, 1936 – June 1, 2022

Jacob Edwin Wiebe (Jim) was born in the village of Edenburg, Manitoba, where he grew up in a farming community east of Gretna. He will be fondly remembered for his grateful and persistently positive outlook on life. He leaves a great legacy with his children and grandchildren.
Jim completed degrees in agricultural economics at the Universities of Manitoba, Kansas State and Tennessee. He joined South Dakota State University as Assistant Professor in 1970. From 1972 to 1994, Jim worked in Edmonton with the Alberta provincial government.
In 2004, Jim moved to Canmore, Alberta, where he and Peggy enjoyed long hikes in the Rocky Mountains. In 2017, they moved to Ottawa to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Jim was an active volunteer at his church and in the broader community throughout his life. This included serving as public school trustee in Edmonton, various volunteer programs in Canmore with Alberta Parks and volunteering with Alberta Mennonite Central Committee.
In Ottawa, Jim enjoyed walking daily with Peggy and being in nature. In the last six months, his cognitive and physical decline was rapid due to dementia. Jim's short-term memory had diminished, but he remained positive and joyful. Jim had a strong faith and faced his illness with courage and hope.
Jim passed away peacefully with family at his side at Hillel Lodge long term care home in Ottawa.
He is survived by Peggy (Hildebrandt), the love of his life and wife of almost 60 years; daughter Patricia (Doug Archibald); son Douglas; grandchildren, Jane and Stuart Archibald; sister Edna Dueck; sister-in-law Katherine; brother Harvey and many other relatives. He was predeceased by his father Abram; his mother Agnes; his sister Alvina Kreutzer and his brother Eldon.
