JOAN ANDERSON
(nee CHENERY)
Joan Anderson passed away at age 97 on December 17, 2022, at the Vista Park Lodge, Winnipeg. She was preceded by her loving husband James (Jim) Anderson who passed in 2013, and her brother Leslie Chenery of Brisbane, Australia.
Joan is survived by her three children, Gloria (Phil), Pat (Joe) and Rick (Allen) plus her six grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.
Joan was born in Plaistow, Essex, England. During the war she met her future husband Jim at a dance in London. In 1946, she sailed to Canada and married Jim in Portage La Prairie where they lived a very short period before moving to Winnipeg. Eventually Joan and Jim settled on Minto Street where they raised their three children and made many friends in the local community. In 1976, they moved to Laval Drive in Fort Richmond.
Joan was very involved with St. Jude's Anglican Church where she led the Junior choir and was a lead soloist in the main choir for many years. As an avid singer, she also sang opera with and was a member of the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. In her love of music, Joan studied both voice and piano with Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music towards her ARCT diploma. Joan and Jim were active square dancers in Winnipeg and enjoyed sewing and knitting for her family. Joan also had a hairdressing business at Sunnyside Hair Salon on Sargent Avenue where she made many friends and clients in the West End. For many years, she competed in hair design competitions with the Manitoba Hair Association.
After her children had grown up, and at age 57, Joan enrolled at the University of Manitoba, St. Johns College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Theology at age 62. Joan proved it was never too late to start a new career if one had her determination and passion. Joan later was an active celebrant at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church in Windsor Park and provided pastoral care at Vista Park Lodge and Grace Hospital.
Eventually, Joan and Jim lived in first Dakota House assisted living and later in Vista Park Lodge. The family would like to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge for their kind support for mother over the past 12 years.
A small family service will be held with interment at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. Should family and friends wish to attend virtually they may do so Friday, December 23, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at: https://afterword.com/stories/joan-elizabeth-anderson
