HELEN JEAN MCIVOR
1950 - 2022
On December 18, 2022 Helen passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Predeceased by her parents, Stuart and Florence McIvor.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister Marion Tornopolski (Maurice), nephews, Michael (Marlaina) and Matthew.
Her first ten years were spent on a farm in Anola, MB and then the family moved to Winnipeg. She attended schools in the Seven Oaks School Division and her love of history and books was evident very early in her life.
Helen attained the following degrees, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and a Masters in History. She started her teaching career in Thompson, MB between 1974 to 1976 and then Seven Oaks School Division from 1976 to 2005.
Helen loved to travel; Europe with her mom, several trips to the United Kingdom, China with Marion, and tour of Germany following the life of Martin Luther in 2017.
She so enjoyed children, her nephews, her students.
In retirement she volunteered at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People and the Manitoba Museum; the Fringe Festival and Thin Air were highlights every summer.
The family would like to thank Dr. Emily Rimmer, her nurse Stephanie, the chemotherapy staff at CancerCare, the 4North staff at the Grace Hospital and the staff of the Grace Hospice for their excellent care.
Helen was a kind and gentle soul, always willing to help. As one of her dear cousins says "the night sky now burns brighter with one more jewel in heaven."
A celebration of Helen's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on December 27, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Fringe Festival.

Dear Marion, I was saddened read of Helen's passing. I have fond memories of our childhood friendship, especially at Beatrice School. But one of my best memories is my Dad loading us all up in the sleigh pulled by a team of horses, all bundled up in blankets, making our way across the field to your house for an evening of fun. Time marches on, but the memories remain. Thinking of you. Kathy (Gillespie) Bell - Posted by: Kathleen (Gillespie) Bell (Childhoodfriend and neighbour) on: Dec 24, 2022

Dear Marion and Maurice and family. Our sincere condolences to you in reading of Helen’s passing. She forever remains in our hearts as a very kind and compassionate friend. Her concern for her students continues to be remembered by students we taught together by them enquiring about her and commenting on how they appreciated her reading to them. The comments expressed by your cousin sum Helen up very fittingly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. She will be missed! Warmly, Charlotte and Don Livingston - Posted by: Charlotte Livingston (Teacher Colleague and friend ) on: Dec 24, 2022
