ELLWOOD OWEN GABRIEL SMYRL
March 15, 1942 December 27, 2022
Our marathon man has run his last race.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ellwood Smyrl on December 27, 2022 at Grace Hospital.
From Winnipeg he leaves his much-loved family, wife Carol Cowles; stepdaughter Jamie; granddaughter Angeline, sister-in-law Helga; the Weber Family; and nephew Chris and family. In Alberta, his dear son, Jim (Tania); and grandchildren, Jamie and Scarlett; daughter Lisa and family; and brother Mike (Barb). In Quebec, stepson Glen and family.
Ellwood enjoyed travel to warm climates and spending time with friends and family. He grew up in Morse Place and started working as a technician at MTS and later at Xerox. He was a service manager in Regina, then in Winnipeg where he made lots of good memories with friends and colleagues. While in Regina, he became a marathon runner whose hero was Terry Fox. In addition to running marathons, he also ran with a team in the Great Balgonie Bed Race. He was also fortunate to work at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Once retired, he enjoyed several part-time jobs at Birchwood Group, Assiniboia Downs, and Piston Ring. After he really retired he spent 20 winters in Arizona the first decade in Yuma and the last at Leisure World in Mesa.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Many thanks to everyone who encouraged and supported Ellwood during his illness including the care teams at CancerCare Manitoba, Grace Hospital, and St. Boniface Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, Ellwood's favourite charities were Rainbow Stage, Assiniboine Park Conservancy, Grace Hospital Foundation, and CancerCare Manitoba.

I have just shed tears of sadness of hearing of Elwood’s passing. He was a handsome and brilliant man. Also kind and loving husband of Carol, step-father to Jaimie and granddaughter Angeline. I enjoyed his company in Regina, Mesa and Winnipeg. Deepest sympathy to Carol and families. Ellen Armstrong - Posted by: Ellen Armstrong (friend) on: Jan 12, 2023

CAROL; So sorry to hear about Barney's passing. My sincere condolences to you and the rest of the family. An original Morse Placer that brought a lot of smiles and laughter when our group which included Shige, Cliffy and Bozo (Bob Durward) got together. He was one of the guys that I wished I should have kept in touch with once we began our careers and from some of the tributes from the Xerox guys he was the kind of a boss that you would like to work for. When you look back on your your life the people you spent a lot of good times with are the pieces of your life's puzzle. Barney is certainly a piece of mine. - Posted by: Tom Trosky (friend) on: Jan 09, 2023

My deepest sympathies to Carol, Jamie, Angeline and all the other families in the passing of Ellwood. My heart breaks for you. The Silver Fox was one of my manager’s at Xerox. He truly was one of the best. His door was always open for any discussion. You’ve been busy, time to rest. Dianne Johnson - Posted by: Dianne Johnson (Co-worker / Friend ) on: Jan 06, 2023

We were so sorry to hear through our Xerox Retiree Group of Elwood's passing and extend our sincere condolences to Carol and all the families. We have so many fun memories of all the company Christmas parties, President Club get aways, and Retirees annual picnics with all the "service techs!" May all your memories give you peace of heart. Hard to say good bye to the Silver Fox, a good friend and colleague. Ellwood became my mentor in the Xerox days and remained there into retirement. Always wiling to share a laugh, Ellwood was the diplomat who could pull us together when we got off track, offered us his knowledge, experience and would always take time to listen and ask how are you and mean it. We spent lots of time having lawn chats by the Assiniboine River and figuring out life. You will be missed Ellwood, sleep in peace. - Posted by: Mike and Audrey Lanoway (Friends) on: Jan 03, 2023

I am very saddened to hear of Ellwood's passing. My sincere condolences to Carol and the families of Ellwood, or "Barney" as the Kuwada family knew him. This was a nickname that was given to him because my Dad could not say Ellwood. I have so many fond memories of Ellwood and my brother, Shig, who together with a number of other friends, spent many happy hours at the Kuwada household, growing up in East Kildonan. Ellwood was always the responsible, helpful and caring person you could count on. May you always have special memories that will live in your hearts forever, Terumi Kuwada - Posted by: Terumi Kuwada (friend) on: Dec 31, 2022
