KAY OYSTRECK
(nee BOYCHUK)
March 6, 1934 - December 31, 2022
The family of Kay Oystreck are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother after a short illness.
Kay was predeceased by her husband Stefan (Steve) Oystreck; daughter Gwen Smith (nee Oystreck); brothers, John, Fred, Mike, Steve and sisters, Margaret (Bewcyk), Mary (Andrusiak) and Eva (Bodnarek). Left to mourn is her sister Betty (Joe) Toporowski.
Kay will be lovingly remembered and missed by her sons: Len (Carol), Glenn (Donna) and Darrell and her daughters: Louella and Arlene (Mirek). She will also be greatly missed by her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Kay Oystreck was born on the family farm at Stornoway south of Kamsack, Saskatchewan to John and Annie Boychuk (nee Hutzel), where she grew up, worked on the farm and had a love for horses.
In 1950 at age 16 Kay left the family farm after meeting and marrying the love of her life, Steve Oystreck. They moved to Dneiper, Saskatchewan where they settled on their homestead. There they farmed and raised five of their six children. In 1958 they moved to Winnipeg, and in 1962 they had their sixth child. In the early 1970s after the children were a little older and started attending school, Kay went on to work at St. Boniface General Hospital as a Health Care Aide for 28 years, many of which were in the Dialysis Unit.
Kay had a love for life and enjoyed all the great things that made her happy. One of her favourite joys was babysitting the grandchildren, which the number of grandchildren grew year after year after year. Like most Baba's, the house was always spotless and had the aroma of butter and onions frying on the stove. In addition to enjoying the many family gatherings, they also loved travelling to Saskatchewan to visit family and friends and to attend many weddings. She also enjoyed Ukrainian and Country music (especially George Jones), cooking, dancing, gardening, bingo and needlepoint. She had a contagious laugh and was always happy and smiling.
When Kay retired in the early 1990s her and Steve would travel to their trailer in Apache Junction, Arizona where they would spend the better part of their winters. They would join others in the community and engage in many activities such as pool tournaments, swimming, dances, board games and cards. Steve always travelled with his violin and cymbala and would often get together with other musicians in the trailer park to provide live entertainment at the many afternoon parties and jam sessions.
Funeral service was held Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.
