ERNEST PAUL SCHMIDT
1935 – 2023

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the family announce the passing of Ernest Paul Schmidt, a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. Ernie went home to his Lord and Saviour on January 2, 2023. He was 87 years old.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Arthur and Lawrence, and sister-in-laws, Joyce and Ann Schmidt. Ernie leaves his beloved wife Helen, who was his faithful friend and companion for nearly 63 years. He is survived by his four children, Darryl (Joanne), Jennifer (Gord Utz), Gerald (Karen), Carla (Curt Hall). He was blessed with seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Ernie was born on February 3, 1935 in Gretna, Manitoba, to parents Henry and Susie (Remple) Schmidt. They lived on a farm in Southern Manitoba. Ernie graduated from Miller Collegiate and worked initially at D.W. Friesens for the first ten years after high school before opening a store in Altona and later moving his growing family to Winnipeg in 1970. Ernie was sales manager at Elmcrest Furniture from BC to Ontario. He enjoyed this work very much, travelling thousands of miles and getting to know people. In later years, Ernie set up a furniture store, Solid Oak Furniture. After several good years he closed the store and became Building Superintendent for River Village Properties.
Ernie was a man of deep faith. He dedicated much of his adult life to serving his Lord as an Elder in the Gospel Assemblies of Winnipeg. Another lifelong interest was Faith Bible Camp. Ernie served on the Board for many years, and some years served as camp manager while wife, Helen, served as Head cook.
Ernie will be remembered as a dedicated family and businessman. He loved to travel and Mom's cooking. He enjoyed the company of his friends and family and was always up for an adventure and even travelling out of town to watch his grandkids play sports!
Dad, the impact of your life on Earth was eternal - your family is proof of that. You will be remembered for your kind and gentle spirit.
We would like to thank the staff at the Convalescent Home and Pembina Place for the loving care and encouragement they gave our dad.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, January 6, at 3:00 p.m. at Charleswood Community Church located at 760 Charleswood Road, Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Bible Camp, 760 Charleswood Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2R 1K6.
