EUGENE PHANEUF
On Wednesday, December 21, 2022, our Father, Eugene Phaneuf, left us peacefully to join our Mother in Heaven.
Remaining to honour his memory are his children, Real (Michelle), Janice Butler, Wendy (Edward) Sikora and Rene (Sandra); grandchildren, Danielle (Jared), Brittany, Nicole (Steve), Brendan (Karen), Monique, Cassandra, Renelle and Sophie; great-grandchildren, Preston, Olivia and Piper; brother Bernard (Julie); sisters-in-law, Stephie, Irene, Celine; brother-in-law Eric; extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Alida; parents, Jean and Florence (Perreault), Gerald Godin; brothers, Edmour and Victor; sister Audrey; and son-in-law Willie.
Born in Domremy, SK on September 1, 1940, Eugene grew up in the Prince Albert area with his mother and brothers. Having lost his dad at a young age, he was very close with his grandfather Eugene Perreault. He deeply loved his large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A dedicated husband and father, Eugene's life centered around family. Our fondest memories include camping and fishing trips with Dad driving the station wagon. He was happiest sitting around a campfire, sharing hilarious stories and family memories. Grandpa/Boppa was adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren - teasing and entertaining them was his greatest joy.
Eugene worked hard to provide for his family and dedicated over 40 years to his career, rising from a Stock Boy to Executive Vice-President of SAAN Stores. He was well-respected in the industry for his professionalism, wit and integrity. Through the years, he generously shared his expertise and mentored others - many who became close friends.
Dad loved hockey, as a young goalie for the College St. Jean Frontenacs, coaching his sons' hockey teams and as a lifelong fan of the game. He also enjoyed bowling and after retirement dedicated himself to golf. He was a consummate people person who forged deep friendships with individuals from all walks of life.
As an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Knights of Columbus, Eugene dedicated 60 years in service to his faith community and Brother Knights. He served in leadership in many parishes, was a Founding Member of the Father Allan Hall Council and a Member of the Fourth Degree. As a Knight, he devoted himself to forwarding the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. He spearheaded fundraising events to support many individuals and organizations including House of Peace, Chez Nous, Welcome Place, and St. Charles Parish. In 2009 Eugene worked tirelessly to raise funds to donate over 60 wheelchairs for the Wheelchair Foundation of Canada.
Prayers will be at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2023; Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2023; both at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed through YouTube St. Charles Winnipeg. www.youtube.com/user/stcharleswpg.
Eugene's family extends our gratitude to Darlene Halliday, Dad's "Superstar" for her wonderful care during his illness, and to the doctors and nurses at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Ward.
Donations may be made in Eugene's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or the Alzheimer Society. Rest in peace Dad.
The family requests that friends visit Eugene Phaneuf's tribute wall at www.bardal.ca where condolences, photos and stories may be placed for all to see.
