MARY HELEN WOLOSCHUK
(nee THOMPSON)

1931 - 2023

Helen Woloschuk (nee Thompson) born June 3, 1931, in Culross Township, Bruce County, ON, loving wife of Stephen (Steve) Woloschuk (January 5, 1931 - November 2, 2021), and daughter of Duncan Thompson and Mary Etta (Hetherington) Thompson, passed away peacefully, in Winnipeg, on January 5, 2023.
One of the first graduates of the Licensed Practical Nursing program at Wingham General Hospital, Helen worked for the United Church Mission Hospital in Ethelbert, MB, where she met Steve. They were married on August 1, 1953, in Teeswater, ON. Helen nursed at Winnipeg General Hospital (now the Health Sciences Centre) and, after raising four daughters, returned to nursing for 15 years at Victoria General Hospital.
Meeting Steve was the highlight of her life. They met at a dance, and together they danced their way through 68 years of marriage. Helen was a loving mother and inspiration to Vicki Woloschuk, Penny Williams, Donna Sedlar and Sandra Woloschuk, proud grandmother to Ashley Desharnais (nee Williams), Tyler Williams, Samantha Williams and Natasha Woloschuk, delighted great-grandmother to twins, Lucas and Jacob Desharnais, fond mother-in-law to Vince Haight, Jody Williams and Frank Sedlar, and warmhearted grandmother-in-law to Al Desharnais.
Helen and Steve were active members of Windermere, Donnelly and Trinity United Churches and the Belgitoba Dance Club. Helen participated in Toastmasters, Job's Daughters, Red Hat Society, several bridge clubs, and The Parkway knitting club. A self-taught and talented seamstress, Helen passed on her sewing skills to her children and grandchildren.
Being married to a teacher allowed for long summer vacations. Helen's love of travel led to family camping trips across Canada, followed by her visiting Scotland and Alaska. Summers were spent at the family cottage in Hnausa and winters in Arizona. In honour of Helen's 90th birthday and her lifetime love of reading, the "free little library" at General Byng School was named, "Helen's Haven" after her nickname for the cottage.
Helen touched the lives of many including her patients, neighbours, and co-worker and dear friend Debbie Hodges. The family is appreciative of the care provided by Home Instead, Home Care, and The Parkway staff.
As per Helen's wishes, a private family Celebration of Life will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to your favourite charity in Helen's name.
