KARL E. NELSON
March 31, 1956 - December 25, 2022

Karl leaves his sister Lori/Kevin Knight, Uncle Marcel, cousins, and their families here and in Detroit, MI and many friends.
Many thanks to the E.M.S. and the W.P.S. for their compassion and help.
Karl graduated from U of M with a B.S. in Mathematics. He was a CGA and worked as a controller and public accountant. Karl then became a computer technology specialist and was a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. His last position was with the Manitoba Metis Federation, and he retired in 2012.
Karl had a lifelong interest in chess and was past president of the WCC and MCA. He was the principal organizer of the 1986 Canadian Open Chess Championship held in Winnipeg where some of the top players in the world participated, including two Grand Masters from the Soviet Union and three from Iceland. Some of his many other interests were bridge, fly-fishing, short-wave radio DXER, magic, history, sports, cooking, music, and movies.
As per his wishes, there is no funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring to be announced.
Karl loved cats, and a donation in Karl's name to an animal shelter is welcome.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Karl was my bestest buddy for literally half a century. There was never a time when we weren’t in constant communication and working on some project or other. His knowledge base was limitless, as was his willingness to share his valued insight. He was the Internet before the Internet! We even had our own sort of coded language with references that no one else would understand — sad to think that it will now be a lost language. Where does the time go? It just seems like yesterday that we met for the first time at the comic stand in the drug store on Rothesay St... Deepest heartfelt sympathies to Lori and Kevin. No one who knew Karl will ever forget him. Rest In Peace my friend, my colleague, my brother. - Posted by: David MacDonald (Friend) on: Jan 28, 2023

  • Karl was a friend for over two decades. Though we once saw each other regularly, Covid regrettably changed that, causing us to have only infrequent communication. His passing comes as a shock, and leaves me deeply saddened. - Posted by: Kim (Friend) on: Jan 17, 2023

  • I considered Karl to be a close friend. We used to get together once a week to talk about movies and artwork. I got to know both his Mom quite well, and his Dad a little, and was honoured to be asked to take his funeral service back in the day... Karl and I had little contact during Covid times other than occasional emails. I am in shock over this loss and I wish Lori well. - Posted by: Raymond Cuthbert (friend) on: Jan 16, 2023

  • I remember Karl from high school where a small group of us bonded in a fledgling computer science class and were the bane of our teacher's existence after we blew thru his 2-year course in 6 months. Our group spent any hours getting together to play football & bridge and discuss science fiction literature. - Posted by: Rick Schoenfeld (High School friend) on: Jan 14, 2023

  • My condolences to Karl’s family.I had worked with Karl and he was always helpful, kind and had a great sense of humour. He so knowledgeable in many areas. Rest in Peace Karl, you are missed. - Posted by: Theresa (Former Colleague) on: Jan 14, 2023
