WALLY MCKECHNIE
It is with great sadness the family of Walter "Wally" McKechnie announce his passing on January 25, 2023 in Dauphin, Manitoba at the age of 81 years. Wally was born on August 4, 1941 in Winnipeg Manitoba, the youngest of 4 children.
Wally started his career with Manitoba Telephone System at the age of 19 and retired with 35 years of service. He was a successful Central Officeman and Manager.
He married Orysia "Button" on May 20, 1967 and began a life lived in Dauphin, Kelowna, Selkirk, Thompson and eventual return to Dauphin. They had one child, a daughter Andrea. Wally and Button were married 36 years until Button's passing in 2003.
Wally's life involved a love for sport. He was a trophy winning bowler, baseball player and curler. In his later years he loved to watch "his" Toronto Blue Jays and many curling events. He loved to fish, play cards and travel but his biggest passion was coin collecting. He had a mint set for pretty much every year.
Wally met Wendy Petersen and spent 15 fun years getting out of his shell. Wendy had a way of getting him to do things to better himself. Going to Denmark, Sweden, Paris and other European cities was a big highlight for Wally. True companions, Wally and Wendy visited friends and family, travelled for sports, delivered meals on wheels, and danced and sang at concerts. Always making time to help the kids and make cherished memories with the grandchildren.
Wally is lovingly remembered by his family, daughter Andrea (Sean) Hallett, grandchildren Liam Hallett and Morgan Hallett. His sister Dorothy Palmer and brother Neil (Fran) McKechnie. His sister-in-law Sylvia Pawlik.
Wendy's family: Erik (Brigitte) Petersen, Lars (Samantha) Petersen, Kris(Jenny) Petersen; numerous "bonus" grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and family. His fur friends Lucy and Jack.
He was predeceased by his wife Orysia "Button" McKechnie, brother Ron and sister-in-law Val McKechnie, parents Bill and Pearl McKechnie and In-laws Fred and Anne Chaykowski. His partner Wendy Petersen, Brothers-in-law Elmer Klock, Roman Pawlik and Mitch Palmer. Sister-in-law Adeline Klock and niece Michelle Klock.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ruffo, Dr. Forsyth, Dr. Marais and Dr. Penrose. All the wonderful nurses (Amma, Hazel, Jeron, Kris and Pam and more) in ICU for the truthful and compassionate care. Special thanks to Wilma for all your help and genuine kindness.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Make-A-Wish Manitoba, 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 3J2
