REVEREND GEORGE FEENSTRA

Reverend George Feenstra, loving husband of Dr. Barbara Paterson, stepfather to Steven and Karen, and father-in-law of Charlene passed away after a battle with ALS February 1, 2023.
He was born in Friesland March 29, 1950. He was predeceased by his parents, Jessie and Ike Feenstra, and brothers, Maynard and Rudy.
George was the eldest of 10 children. He worked as a home care attendant for 12 years and provided loving care to many. He attended the theological seminary in Vancouver. The committee that recommended his ordination as a United Church minister recognized him as a true maverick. Those of us who knew and loved him recognized that this was one of his many attributes we appreciated.
George provided ministry care for the United Church charges of Dugald, Anola, Warren, Meadow Lea, Steinbach, Vancouver, Clinton, Ashcroft, Fredericton, and Winnipeg. Congregations appreciated George's wisdom, kindness, music, and his rapport with young people.
Anyone who knew George recognized him as a kind, gentle man with a warm smile. He had a great passion and affinity for the marginalized in our society. He frequently sought the companionship of people living on the street and volunteered at Winnipeg's Oak Table.
His resounding message to the world was, "Be kind to one another" and some of his last words were, "Tell everyone to have no regrets. I knew their love".
A celebration of George's life will be held at The Big Red Church (127 Cobourg Avenue) Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Maureen McCartney will officiate.
A special thank you to Laura and Gregg Armistead, the staff at the Deer Lodge Motor Neuron Disease Clinic, the staff at Concordia Urgent Care, and all our family and friends who supported and encouraged us throughout this difficult journey.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • The most authentic minister I have ever known has left us. He was empathetic and understanding to everyone. It was so easy to communicate with him because he had the ability to hear what you were NOT saying. He rooted for the underdog and could relate to the struggles people faced. He was there for the most important times of my life. He taught me to dare to be a Daniel. I see him wearing his clown nose and smiling down upon us. I feel so blessed to have known him. Peace be with you Barbara. - Posted by: Wendy Ranseth (Former member of George’s congregation ) on: Feb 11, 2023

  • Condolences to Barbara and families. A life well lived with love, laughter, and freely shared knowledge. Rest in Peace George. Until we meet on the other side, keep singing and playing your guitar. - Posted by: Lil Arsenault (Friend, Sheep of his ministry and fellow musician) on: Feb 10, 2023

  • I met George as part of Woolastook Presbytery in New Brunswick. As I entered into the process of candidacy for ministry, many felt it their duty to challenge me. George did as well, but in a very encouraging and helpful way. Others chose to merely set up obstacles for me to navigate when George challenged me to help me grow. I will never forget him standing at a meeting with a Bible in one hand and The Manual in the other asking us which one we followed. I also use words he used that day. I'm employed by the United Church of Canada but I work for God. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Greg Williams (Colleague) on: Feb 08, 2023

  • I speak of George often, as one of the people who encouraged me into ministry. I’m so sorry to hear he has gone. My sympathies. - Posted by: Alice Finnamore (Fruend) on: Feb 08, 2023

  • George and family, I knew I think via Lex that George was unwell. Every now and then I'd wonder if he passed now I see he has. My condolences to friends and family, and if you ever need to talk you can find me via Georges fb. I'm here to listen support Cory r like Lee and Roger and Chris who passed. George was someone I'd have little chats with from time to time back in the Gordies coffeehouse days. I knew him to be a gentle, kind man like the obit says. Colorful fun creative and yes youthful for his age. I'm sure he was a good pastor but I only went to 1 or 2 of the services there. I been thinking of another pastor I had recently and we walked past a place tonight that had a big tv in it on it looked like an interesting business and it was some St. Boniface Christian place not necessarily a church but spiritual center maybe, and then less then an hour back and I find out about George. I know George knew what it was like to follow god but also be kind and accepting. I always noticed how much he showed that in his style and personality. Rest easy in heaven, say Hi to the other mutuals, most recently up there to my knowledge from Gordie etc is Clark I'm sure you guys are enjoying dancing around jolly like to music in the beyond, with a nice cup of coffee and perhaps a piece of cake. I wish I could be up there with you guys, but in time. Condolences again to the family and friends of George, sorry to ramble. - Posted by: cory (online friend /in person aquantinace ) on: Feb 07, 2023

  • I got to know George at Winnipeg Christian Center. Later, I would see his writings on Facebook. George had a different way of looking at things, and made some very thought-provoking comments. Thank you for daring to be different, George, and giving others the courage to see with new eyes, and hear with new ears. - Posted by: Vicki Rempel (Friend and fellow member at Winnipeg Christian Center) on: Feb 07, 2023

  • I'm sorry to hear of George's passing. I remember him from VST days, especially his playfulness and passion for justice. I remember him being taken in by police during a protest in Vancouver while wearing a clown nose. My condolences to all of his family. - Posted by: Heidi Koschzeck (Colleague) on: Feb 06, 2023

  • I 'knew' George only virtually, but I do know that he was a gentle man, a man of passion, of integrity, and of great kindness. A clown, a prophet, a sweet light of the kin-dom. He will be missed by many, in many communities. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Bette McCracken (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2023

  • George and I first met at VST and loved to spar with one another on theology in general and the UCCAN in particular. Proverbs 27: 17 seems the best summary of our relationship as students and colleagues. I'll miss the conversations. Well done you good and faithful servant. - Posted by: Reverend John Maich (Colleague) on: Feb 06, 2023

  • A truly gentle man who took the time to listen, to visit & to truly minister to all. Our condolences to Barbara and his family & friends. sincerely, Sharon & Carl, Summerland, B.C. - Posted by: Sharon O'Shaughnessy (past member of Dugald United Church) on: Feb 05, 2023

  • What a man --clown --street minister --biblical narrator -- gadfly to the high Priests and would-be princes and queens: Delighted to have known "Geo", his devoted wife, Barbara and close friend from school days (also fellow traveler and anarchist muckraker, Daniel Wieb). Already miss George and which book would it be in the jacket side pocket he was devouring...before plucking guitar chords of goldie oldies in the Sanctuary. Blessed be, George.....
