EVELYN NANCY SOPER
May 23, 1961 - February 7, 2023

Our beloved Evelyn passed away unexpectedly in her sleep. She was the eldest child of Dr. Robert and Margaret Soper. She was predeceased by her father and is lovingly remembered by her mother, brother David, niece Katie, aunt Pat, friend Mitch, and dog Annie.
Evelyn lived her entire life in Winnipeg, save for three years in the 70s, when the family moved to Vienna, Austria.
Evelyn was a highly competitive swimmer with the Manitoba Marlins. Following graduation from Fort Richmond Collegiate, she spent her career with the City of Winnipeg as an Aquatic Instructor Guard. She was a gifted teacher who loved children and inherently understood them. She also taught aerobics and aqua-fitness. Evelyn took secondments from her regular job to work summers in the English Gardens at Assiniboine Park. She was an avid and skilled gardener.
Evelyn was an early adherent of cycling to work. She loved live music and was a staunch supporter of the local scene.
The highlight of Evelyn's winters was the annual Soper family vacation to Barbados. She loved the Island and would look forward to renewing friendships each year.
For many years, Evelyn and Mitch lived on Lipton, where their home was a meeting place for their large group of friends. She was a generous person who would do anything for you and was happiest socializing with a big smile and an infectious laugh. She will be dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved her.
A reception will be held at Nicolino's, 2077 Pembina Highway, on Sunday, February 26, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Dear Mitch, We are deeply saddened to hear of Evelyn's passing. Please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. Evelyn was a wonderful friend, and her memory will always hold a special place in our hearts. We were shocked to hear the news, and our thoughts immediately went to the many happy memories we all shared. We will never forget the fun-filled evenings spent on the deck on Lipton, enjoying delicious dinners, drinks, music and laughter. Those moments will always be treasured, and we are also grateful for the time we spent together at our family cabin in the Whiteshell around the fire with friends. As we read the memories posted by others, we are reminded of the tremendous impact Evelyn had on the lives of those around her. Her life was filled with love, joy, and laughter, and we feel privileged to have been a part of it. Once again, please accept our sincere condolences. If there is anything we can do to support you during this time, please don't hesitate to reach out. Sincerely, Ryan and Georgia Doyle - Posted by: Ryan and Georgia Doyle (Friends) on: Feb 22, 2023

  • I’m very happy that I was able to reconnect with Evelyn last summer and to reconnect her with my sister Erin. It meant a lot to all of us. I’m very sad that we won’t be able to do it this summer. Thank you Evelyn for your laughter, your friendship and kindness to Erin. You will be so terribly missed by so many people. We had a wonderful time with you. With heartfelt condolences to Mitch and to Evelyn’s family. Kelly Moorhead, friend Vancouver, BC - Posted by: Kelly Moorhead (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2023

  • I’m so sorry to hear of Evelyn’s passing. She was my instructor 40 years ago at the Lions pool in the summer. She was one of my favorites at the pool. Always kind and kept me in line! Once and awhile she would Let me off off not doing my four laps to get into the deep end. I also remember her teaching me how to dive and made me the fish I am today. I often think about my days growing up at the lions pool. I wish I could have reconnected with her again. Thinking of you all. Love and hugs. - Posted by: Heather (MILNE) Hazelton (Swim instructor ) on: Feb 19, 2023

  • I had the great privilege of knowing Evelyn in my youth, as a classmate, sports teammate, and friend. Evelyn was a beautiful person inside and out, kind, non-judgmental, with a wonderful live-and-let-live attitude. Through our interactions growing up and later, as adults, she would always have me laughing and feeling so much pleasure, and even joy, just being in her presence. She was truly a unique individual, the kind the world needs more of. She will be greatly missed by so many. - Posted by: Valerie Fortney (friend) on: Feb 19, 2023

  • I’m shocked to hear of Evelyn’s passing. I’m really sad. She is already very missed. It’s heartbreaking. She has helped me so much to keep moving forward this past year. It’s a terrible loss for us all. She has always been a big energy. I’ve known her since my teens. I’m so glad we shared a meal in Winnipeg this past fall. I can hear her voice clear as day and as Debbie says “her infectious laughter”. Rest in peace beauty and I’ll see you again. Sending condolences to her family and friends but especially Annie and Mitch. ❤️ - Posted by: Kimberly (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2023

  • I was a neighbour on Lipton for 10 years and have so many memories of time spent on our porches, and yards with Evelyn and Mitch. We shared a love of gardening, cocktails, and music- so many memories of shared time and laughter. My daughter and I joined Evelyn in Barbados 1 year and spent time with her family and many friends there. She was a beautiful soul and we have been robbed of more years in her company. Rest in peace. • I always admired Evelyn's strengths and kindness. As a junior Marlin, I found she was helpful and supportive. We went on to work together for 12 years in Aquatics. She was a most wonderful combination of being pragmatic and fun at the same time. Passionate about swimming, animals, people and gardening, I always admired her ways and personal strength. I still think of Miss Evelyn, when I chop up garlic .... another passion of hers. So many good memories of Ev. Very sorry for your family's loss, much too early. - Posted by: Tracy Janes (Laliberte) (Friend, fellow Marlin and coworker) on: Feb 18, 2023

  • I will miss Ev's infectious laugh and her generosity as a hostess. Because I know how much she loved her l'il dog Annie, a donation in her memory has been made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. I think she'd like that. - Posted by: Debbie Wall (Friend and fellow member of Winnipeg's punk community) on: Feb 14, 2023
