SERAFINA ABIUSI
(LOSCHIAVO)

With sadness, the family of Serafina Abiusi announce her passing on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at 85 years of age.
Survived by her sister Fedora and brother-in-law Gino Ruga, in Amato, Italy and brother-in-law Mario Anastasio of Winnipeg. She is loving remembered by her children, Toni (Rob), Carmela (Ralph) and Jack (Maria); her grandchildren, David (Heather), Adam, Marc (Loren), Justin (Cait), Emilio (Emily), Francesca (Steven) and Jackson; great-grandchildren, Arianna, Giulia and Grace; along with many nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and in Italy.
Sera was predeceased by her husband Emilio, parents (Teresa and Saverio Loschiavo), brother Frank and sister-in-law Sara Loschiavo.
Serafina was born in the southern Italian village of Amato, Province of Catanzaro, Calabria, in a post-war era where life was difficult and food was scarce. However, her family was fortunate to operate the village store which allowed them the opportunity to provide for themselves. Sera's childhood was marked by the untimely death of her father when she was eight years old. As a result, life changed quickly. Her mother pulled her out of school to help the family by working in the family store. It was in this store that mom became the food and wine connoisseur that defined her in her later years. Despite the hardship, Mom never complained about her childhood. Her only sadness was not having a father. She always spoke fondly of his loving and friendly character and admired families lead by loving fathers.
Following the path of many Italians, Sera immigrated to Winnipeg in the 1950s at the age of 17. She married Emilio in 1957 and they settled in the West End of Winnipeg.
While Dad was the hard worker and excellent provider, Sera became the young mother of three, the financial planner, the homemaker and hostess to all. Our home became a meeting place for family and friends alike and mom became the generous hostess.
Mom was modest, generous and grateful for the life she had in Canada. She believed there was nothing better to aspire to in this life than to have your own family and to celebrate with good food and friends.
Mom's favourite saying in her later years was "people just have to love each other and everything will be OK".
Mom lived a full and meaningful life. Her love toward her children and grandchildren was totally unconditional. She found her greatest joy and purpose being a grandmother. Her grandchildren were blessed to have a Nanni that was unconditionally supportive of them.
Special thanks go to the home care workers and staff at Simkin Centre Personal Care Home for their care of mom.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harvest Manitoba, 1085 Winnipeg Avenue, (204) 982-3663.
