GERALD JAMES HOPPS
January 4, 1943 - February 9, 2023

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of Gerald Hopps, our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and pépère on February 9, 2023, with family by his side at the age of 80
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Sophie, son Douglas (Monika), grandson Dominick, granddaughter Alyssa, sister Shirley (Bert) Skogan and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is predeceased by his dear parents, Gerald and Ada, and brother, Dale.
Jerry was born on January 4, 1943, in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He moved to Winnipeg with his parents in 1946 following the end of the Second World War. Despite living in Manitoba, the majority of his life, he never lost pride in his maritime roots.
Jerry was a student at Vincent Massey Collegiate when it opened in 1960; he graduated two years later, in 1962. Shortly afterwards he joined the Canadian Army Reserves where he served from 1963 to 1974 and earned the rank of Sergeant. Jerry worked at a number of businesses including Standard Brands, and British-American Construction & Materials (BACM) before he took a position with Canada Post in 1978, where he remained until his retirement in 2003.
In 1978, in a small ceremony, consisting of just two guests, he married the love of his life, Sophie. In 1981, they welcomed their only child, a son, Douglas.
Jerry was a man of kindness, honesty, integrity, and pride, which are all attributes that will be instilled in his cherished grandchildren, Dominick, and Alyssa. He took great pride in his family, his Irish heritage and being Canadian. Jerry was a big believer in donating blood, which he did over 80 times. In his younger days he loved to hunt, fish and curl; in recent years he enjoyed being with family and friends, following the stock market, watching Canadian football, curling and golf, and spending summer days at Assiniboia Downs watching the horses run.
There will not be a day where his family will not think of him and fondly remember many of the great occasions we shared.
Jerry, Dad, we love you, we miss you and we will see you again someday.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jerry's name to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 90 or the CNIB.
