MARY KOWALCHUK
January 11, 1929 - February 19, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Kowalchuk (Bialek).
Predeceased by her husband Steve Kowalchuk; her brothers, Edward (Vicky), John (Rosalia), Bobby (Violet), Casey; and sister Adeline (Nick). She leaves to mourn her son Harold (Linda), her daughter Valerie, her grandson David, her brother Lawrence (Joan Bialek); sisters, Helen (Victor Bretchka), Kathy (Lawrence Glowacki) and Betty (Stanley Regula); and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was born in Hazelglen, Manitoba, one of 10 children. She met Steve at an early age, married and moved to Winnipeg. She was a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church and the Women's Club. For many years she worked at Tan Jay where she took full advantage of employee pricing.
Mary was the oldest daughter and keeping the Bialek and Kowalchuk families together was important to her. She held numerous Christmas, Easter, birthday, bridal and baby showers. Mary enjoyed crocheting and had lots of Afghans in her closet just waiting for an occasion to give one to someone. Mary loved to shop!!!!! Her closets were full of new clothes with price tags still attached, and her cupboards were packed for those special events where gifts were needed.
Of course, one of Mary's biggest loves was her grandson, David. Mary and Steve went to Hawaii many, many times but the ones that they cherished most were the ones when David was there.
Unfortunately, during her last years she developed dementia and this both challenged and frustrated her but she fought it to the end. We thank the Kildonan Personal Care Home for the respect and care they provided her. Also, thanks to Debbie and Ray Kashuba (niece and husband), Mom was never without her chocolate cookies and chips.
On March 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. there will be a service at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery, 4533 Main Street.

To me, Mary was Harold’s mother, that was honour enough. Nothing was more important than that. Harold was outstanding because of his mother, to me, because she was always supportive and prou d of him. I remember her as quietly elegant and always well-dressed. She looked, to me, astonishingly like my paternal grandmother did when she was younger so I sometimes thought that they were possibly related. Good enough—-I never spoke with her until years later when I found that she was in Kildonan Personal Care where I visited my aunt. She talked with me when prompted about Harold and Valerie and that’s how I’ll always remember her, concerned about her children. - Posted by: Doug Sparkes (Neighbor) on: Feb 26, 2023
