ELEANOR FREEMAN

Predeceased by her parents, William and Mary Leachman (Boitson), her siblings, Mike, Anne, Maria, Bill, Ollie, Mae, Joe, Louie, and Tommy; as well as her loving husband Gordon who died much too young, leaving her to raise their three children on her own.
Born in Winnipeg, she spent her childhood in Weston before moving to Cathedral Avenue. Eleanor always lived an active life. She did roller dancing, rowing, curling, synchronized swimming and swimming. She was one of the first female lifeguards in the City of Winnipeg.
She supervised the swim lessons programs first at Sherbrook Pool and then at North Centennial until 1979, when she moved to B.C. where she worked at SunGod Pool as an Aquatic Supervisor.
In her semi retirement, she lifeguarded at Camp Kwomais. She continued swimming regularly (especially at Glencoe Estates her home of many years) well into her 90s. Her volunteer jobs were too numerous to list.
Eleanor's adventurous spirit took her travelling to many places, many times.
She was always full of tales, not only of her travels, but her children and grandchildren. She didn't limit her generosity to her immediate family as she adopted numerous other people throughout her life. She was never afraid to "step up" when the need arose. She hosted many international students and over the years, her home was opened to many people.
She leaves to mourn her sister Dorothy, her children, Douglas (Colette), Donna (Walter), Dale (Lee), her grandchildren, Alisa, Denae, Brielle, Anne Lynn, Danica and Susie, great-grandson Declan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and adopted persons.
A special "Thank You" to the caring staff and volunteers at Westminster House in South Surrey and the volunteer staff at Oak Avenue Hub.
A pink themed "celebration of a life well lived" will be held on Monday, March 6, at Oak Avenue Hub, 12740 102 Ave., Surrey, 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., followed by interment at Valley View Funeral Home & Cemetery, 14644- 72nd Ave., Surrey.

  • Mrs Freeman was a wonderful lady. She and my mum grew up together in Weston and remained lifelong friends. Eleanor taught my brother, sister and myself swimming every Saturday afternoon at Sherbrook Pool. My mum and I send our condolences to Dale, Donna and Douglas. - Posted by: Donna Stone (Family friend) on: Mar 05, 2023

  • You have my deepest sympathy. Wishing you Doug, Donna and Dale peace, comfort, courage, and lots of love. Eleanor was the best and my favorite Swim instructor and Lifeguard. She was so proud to teach my son how to do front crawl when he was 5 years old. Eleanor never believed in "too young" or "too old". - Posted by: Jason (Student ) on: Mar 03, 2023
