JACK (JOHN) FLAHERTY

It is with great sadness that the family of Jack (John) Flaherty announce his passing on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 78.
Jack was born in Galt, Ontario on December 2, 1944 to Jack (John) and Helen Flaherty. He was predeceased by his parents and granddaughter Kayla.
Jack is survived and greatly missed by his wife Deborah Flaherty (nee Coyston); son John Flaherty; daughters, Nicole Doyle (Jay), and Katrina Dick (Graeme); and sister, Linda Taylor (Ross). He was an amazing papa to his grandchildren: Hailey, Evan, Claire, Rachael and Ryan. And a wonderful uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his golfing buddies, Larry Todd and Dale Gray.
Jack met the love of his life, Debby, while working at Zellers. His career at Zellers took him all over Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where he made many lifelong friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Ali Khan and Dr. Tosin Oladini and the amazing staff in Palliative Care at Riverview Health Centre for the care and compassion given to Jack and our family.
At Jack's request cremation has taken place and celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Jack may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, Palliative Care Program.
Despite the pain, Jack came out a hero and stayed strong to the end.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Sandy and I both worked with Jack when he first came to Winnipeg. Store 197 on Nairn Ave. From there I worked with Jack at many of the other stores throughout our careers with ZELLERS until the stores completely closed. It was such a pleasure to have worked with him over the years. He was my mentor in so many ways, also a good friend. • I will always be blessed to have had the great pleasure of knowing Jack as my friend and neighbour, and golfing buddy for years. Open and easy going he drew people to him such that you'd thereafter know him as your friend too. At Wildwood Golf Course, his favourite, he was always delivered of hugs, handshakes, greetings across fairways and see you soons. And he returned same! And he loved his sports. Though an avid Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and Raptors fan, he tracked and was current on stats and standings across the professional sporting world...and loved to discuss (and armchair manage) it all. His shear presence will be missed. Deepest Condolences to his wife Debbie and his family. Larry Todd. - Posted by: Larry Todd (Friend) on: Mar 07, 2023

  • I am so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. Jack would always have a smile on his face and time for a chat when he came to golf at Wildewood. You could count on Jack as a friend and as one that would lend wise counsel and positivity, no matter the situation or the issue. I am grateful that I knew him. On behalf of all of his Wildewood friends and from me personally, our condolences to his family. He will be missed. - Posted by: Kathy Bentley - Wildewood Golf (friend) on: Mar 07, 2023

  • My deepest condolences to Jack’s family. I worked with Jack at many stores here in Winnipeg. On many occasions it was at my home store 196. The most recent being when we were renovating all the Winnipeg stores. He was an amazing man and I am extremely grateful that we got the chance to meet. He was a legend. Rest in Peace Mr Flaherty.
