ELLEN GERBASI
Surrounded by the love of her family, Ellen Gerbasi passed away on March 4, 2023 after a short battle with cancer.
She is survived by her daughters Marisa (Michael), Gina, and Tracy (Don); grandchildren, Madison, Katelynn (Lili), Jenna (Cody), Nicholas (Hannah), Bradley (Sara) and Kristyn (Roy); and great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Bodhi, Nash and Wyatt. Grandma so desperately wanted to meet the twins due in June. Now Grandma and Poppa will be watching from above. Mom is also survived by her brothers Murray (Louise), Larry (Linda); and sisters-in-law Helen, Jeanine, Muffy and Penny; and by many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Sam; sisters Stella and Anne; brothers Bill and Ernie; sister-in-law Elaine; and brothers-in-law Al and Harry.
Mom was born in Rossburn on July 13, 1932, and moved to Angusville as a baby where she spent her younger years. In her early twenties, Mom was diagnosed with tuberculosis and as was the treatment of the time, spent 18 months in the sanitorium in Ninette, Manitoba. Once she recovered she came to Winnipeg and lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Al, on Furby Street.
Mom met the love of her life through Auntie Muffy. With Dad being too shy to ask Mom out, he got his big sister to call and ask her to go on a date with him. The rest was history. Mom and Dad were married for over 60 years when Dad passed away in 2020.
Friday nights were spaghetti night at Mom and Dad's for over 25 years and after Dad passed away we continued the tradition, only to find out recently that Mom had never really liked spaghetti. It was the family time that she loved the most.
Mom loved to cook for all of us and even when she was sick she was worried about what we were going to eat for supper, planning our meals for us. She also loved knitting and we were all the recipients of sweaters, hats, mitts and scarves. There were many homeless people who benefited from her knitting when she made over 100 mitt and hat sets in one year to be donated.
The last two years were hard on Mom, losing Dad during Covid, although she never complained. She never missed the chance to spend time with us going on any adventures we planned. We are grateful that we had an opportunity to take her to Las Vegas in May 2022. She was so excited to go with her daughters and sons-in-law. We have to say that we had a hard time keeping up with her.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 10, 2023 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, with Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating. Entombment followed at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
May you always walk in sunshine and God's love around you flow, for the happiness you gave us, no one will ever know. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, a part of us went with you, the day God called you home. A precious heart stopped beating, and our faith, put to the test. God broke our hearts, to prove to us, He only takes the best. A million times we've cried. If love could only have saved you, you never would have died.
