MICHAEL (MIKE) KOHUT
January 17, 1929 – March 6, 2023
It is with sad but loving hearts that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mike passed away peacefully March 6, 2023, at Holy Family Home at the age of 94.
Dad was born in Stuartburn, MB on January 17, 1929 to Sam and Aksana Kohut. He left school early to help on the family farm, Dad loved the family farm as well as Mom's homestead in Gardenton, MB. He self-learned his many amazing skills. His biggest loves were construction and gardening, we all benefitted from fresh produce from the garden.
Dad was a hard worker his entire life, he worked at Manitoba Bridge and Engineering for over 25 years where he also served as Secretary Treasurer to the MBE Credit Union. He was also self-employed with his own company, Kohut Construction. From roofing to renovation to building brand new homes, Dad was always busy. He proudly built two beautiful homes for his family.
Dad loved to curl, he truly felt no one could sweep with a rink rat broom as hard as he could. Saturdays at the Victoria Curling Club were never missed. His biggest joy was curling with his children Clarence, Carol, and Michael when their team entered a few bonspiels over the years.
Dad enjoyed giving back to his community and volunteered for various organizations, he received an Honorary Lifetime Member award from West Kildonan Seniors Recreation Club. He was also Treasurer for the Legion in Morris. Dad and Mom devoted many years volunteering at McBeth House, which kept them active and busy during their retirement years.
Dad was an avid card player and loved playing whist, canasta, rummy, cribbage, and chess; he was a very strategic player and so enjoyable to play with. Dad loved his family endlessly, and his favourite moments were when the entire family were all seated together, enjoying Mom's cooking.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Clarence (Maria), Carol Peever (Wells), Michael Jr. (Leila); his grandchildren, Paul Kohut (Isla), Linda Kohut (Jim Watkins), Sean Peever (Keiland Stiglitz) of Surrey, BC, Steven Peever, and Julia Kohut; great- grandchildren, Lana Kohut, Reid Kohut and Jack Watkins.
Dad was predeceased by his devoted wife of 70 years, Olga Kohut in 2019, parents, Sam and Aksana Kohut, his siblings, Mary Mickleboro of Hamilton, ON, Nick Kohut of Morris, MB, John Kohut and Al Kohut.
Dad will be missed dearly by his sister Lena Pawlitsky of Kelowna, BC; sisters-in-law, Kay Kohut and Nataline Mandzie; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea Babick and staff of 4C St. Basil's for the exceptional and dedicated care they provided to our father during his time there. Special thank you to the staff of the Emergency Department at Grace Hospital and Dr. Chakraborty and staff during his brief time there.
A private family burial for the immediate family has been held.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St., West St. Paul, MB is entrusted with arrangements.
