DORIS JOSEPHINE NIKKEL
April 24, 1926 - March 15, 2023

Doris Josephine Nikkel (nee West) went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on March 15, 2023.
She leaves behind her children: daughter-in-law Priscilla, Joy (Brian) Stevens, Allison James, Norman (Solange), Harvey (Jane), Philip (Monique), Stuart (Theresa), Gloria (Bruce) Cook, 34 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Mom is predeceased by her husband John in 1981, son David in 2013, granddaughter Jennifer in 2017, former daughter-in-law Zenaida in 2022, and all of her siblings.
Mom was born on April 24, 1926, on the farm in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, the 10th of 11 children born to James and Ruth West. She was baptized at the age of 13 and fully committed her life to Jesus when she was 20. She also made a commitment to our father that same year and they were married in June 1947.
Her dream to be a teacher was realized the same year as she was asked to teach at the Clarkleigh West school. Her teaching career ended when the children started arriving in 1949. Mom worked very hard on the farm and raising the family, but always found time to enjoy her flowers. Mom and Dad were founding members of Manitoba Farm Vacations and hosted many people from many parts of the world.
After our father passed away, Mom continued farming with Stuart and Theresa. She loved spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing games with them, reading many stories to them and also sharing her faith in Jesus with them.
Mom went on many travelling adventures with her sisters, Maisie and Violet, and her children and grandchildren. She visited many places, including China, Ecuador, Israel, England, Scotland, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Caribbean. She also loved spending time with her siblings and their families at Fishing Lake. Mom was involved in many community groups and enrolled in painting and woodworking classes in her retirement years. She also was a writer and authored many poems.
Mom always had a cheerful spirit and could often be heard singing hymns even in her last few years in the care home.
A private family service will be held Monday, March 20, 2023, at Clarkleigh United Church, followed by a public reception at Lundar Legion Hall at 4:30 p.m. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Davis, Matt, Randal, Michael, Brad, Chris, Paul, Donald, Jim, Steven, Jeff, Spencer, Alex, Shawn, Curtis, Jason, Austin and Tyson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Doris has been a special friend for many years. I first met Doris when I, Cindy, was the organist for a few years at the Clarkleigh United Church & also through the Christian Women's Club Dessert Coffee Meetings held in Lundar, which she was instrumental in spearheading. I appreciated her strong faith, her Godly wisdom, her prayers, her gift of hospitality (she was a wonderful baker!) & especially her gift of laughter! One memory that I have is going with Doris, Mabel Fingland & Margaret Wainwright to a Women's Conference at Hecla. As mentioned in her obituary, Doris enjoyed going on "adventures" & our "adventure" started off by Doris driving over my square, RED (like how could you not see that?!) Tupperware container full of muffins that I had put with my luggage out on the sidewalk beside my driveway! Tupperware is strong, but not that strong & needless to say, it got rather crunched! She was quite horrified & very apologetic & offered to replace it. The muffins miraculously somehow "survived," sort of, & we still had a good laugh about her driving skills or lack there of! I don't think this was Doris' "only" driving "mishap?" There is something to be said about 4 women who start singing hymns & choruses at 2:00 a.m.! First the giggles & muffled laughter started, followed by the SNORING! I finally went down to the front desk & asked if there was any place I could catch a few winks because it certainly wasn't going to happen in our room!! We had SUCH a FUN weekend together & whenever the 4 of us would get together, often at a Christian Woman's Club Dessert Coffee, the "Hecla" trip would undoubtedly be brought up, along with more laughter as we reminisced! The other memory of Doris I have is her unconditional love & genuine care & concern that she had for people. She had giftings in leadership but also evangelism, hosting Friendship Bible Coffees in her home for many years. Her heart was that she wanted everyone to know the love of Jesus Christ & His death on a cross to pay for not only the sins of the world, but for each one of us personally. She LOVED her family & was so very proud of you all, not just for your many accomplishments but for WHO you EACH were! As family I'm sure you all know but also as her friend, that her warm & loving HUGS were THE BEST! Our thoughts & prayers are with you all during this time. We know as believers in Our Lord & Saviour, Jesus Christ, that even though we die, yet shall we live! That is our HOPE that we WILL see our loved ones again! Doris' physical body on this earth grew weak & she died but be reassured, she is MORE ALIVE now than she ever has been! I wonder what "adventures" she's having with loved ones who have gone before her & especially with JESUS?! Til we meet again Doris..... - Posted by: Jeff & Cindy (Smith) Plett (friends) on: Mar 19, 2023

  • My thoughts are with the family at this time. Your mother was a wonderful, kind woman. - Posted by: Marlene Byron Wylychenko (Childhood friend of siblings) on: Mar 19, 2023

  • Doris has been a wonderful neighbour and friend to our family for many years, and a very special friend to my Mom, Audrey Greenham. She was a very loving and warm person who taught us love and faith just by being herself. I can still hear her laugh and see her smile and the twinkle in her eyes. Sending you all my prayers, love and condolences, Judy McKinnon - Posted by: Judy McKinnon (Neighbour and friend) on: Mar 18, 2023
