ANITA ETHELMAE SCHMIDT
On Monday, February 27, 2023, with her daughters at her side, Anita Ethelmae Schmidt. Born in Winnipeg on April 19, 1935 to Reginald and Alice (Thring) Wightman. Predeceased by her beloved husband Lawrence, her sister-in-law Pat Wightman, and her brother-in-law Richard Schmidt.
Anita is survived by her family: daughters, Anna, Jillian (Jeff Lamothe) and Joan (Corey Glowacki); grandchildren, Jill, Tom (Kelsey Kazmierczak), Zach (Claire-Sophie Aleman), Lauren, Lexi Rayne, Hugh, Lexi Danielle and Macy; her brother Clive Wightman (Eleanor Huband); brother-in-law Kenneth Schmidt (Brenda); and her nephews, niece and their families.
Anita grew up in St. James, graduating from the University of Manitoba in Arts in 1956. She married Lawrence Schmidt on September 19, 1957. Anita worked as a librarian, freelance writer, arts administrator, and medical receptionist, as well as dedicating many years to raising her family. Her passion for history shone through the books she published and the many collections of family stories and photos she produced. She was recognized in 1974 by the Manitoba Historical Society for her publication "Reports and Letters of the Reverend W. H. Taylor," and in 1977 by the Red River Historical Society for "On the Banks of the Assiniboine." She was a tireless volunteer for Ecco Singers and served on the condo board of 703 Riverwood Avenue.
Above all Anita valued family and friends - close friends from "Hen Club," the Penhandlers writing group, and Bridge Club, longstanding Deer Lodge Place neighbours, her parish community of St. James Anglican. Summers spent at West Hawk Lake were opportunities to strengthen family bonds and share hospitality. She leaves behind friends with whom she remained close for a lifetime. Playing an active role in the lives of all her grandchildren was a great joy to her, and she went above and beyond to provide care to many friends and extended family members.
The family extends our gratitude to the staff at River Ridge II Memory Care and Seven Oaks Hospital for the loving care they provided for our mom.
We will be celebrating Anita on Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Home, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering for burial of ashes will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, Manitoba Branch, or the Alzheimer Society Manitoba.

I have known Anita since 1941, when she started Grade 1 and I was in Grade 2. During the War, her Grade and mine shared the same classroom. Also, our families went to St. James Anglican Church and as children, we went to Sunday School followed by a Young People's social group while in high school and beyond. After high school, she went to U of M while I was in the workforce. We remained in touch after marriage, but our friendship continued when my spouse and I moved to Calgary. My sister Carol (Jackson) Throp continued her close relationship during the years even after she moved to Victoria in 2004. Anita was always true to her friends and family and was of noble character in every way. May she rest in peace in the arms of Our Lord. - Posted by: Ruth (Jackson) Steeves, #118, 1773 Feltham Rd., Victoria, BC V8N 6E8 (Long-time friend) on: Mar 22, 2023
