BEATRICE MARY BALDWIN

March 30, 1923 – February 11, 2023

Beatrice “Mary” Baldwin passed away in Brandon on February 11, 2023, six weeks short of her 100th birthday. Mary is lovingly remembered by her daughter Eleanor (Bill) Bradley of Brandon, granddaughter Krista (Brad) Congdon of Halifax, grandson Cody Bradley (Ira Rak) of Saskatoon, sister-in-law Peggy Longstaff, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was born on the family farm in the RM of Blanshard on March 30, 1923. She was the 4th child of Ernest and Beatrice Longstaff. She attended school at Cardale, where she completed her Grade 12, graduating in 1942. This past July, she happily attended the Cardale school reunion and was honoured to participate in the ceremony. Mary worked for a year at the Bank of Montreal in Oak River while continuing to help out on the family farm. Her brother Doug introduced her to his friend, Bert Baldwin, whom she married on November 22, 1947. Bert and Mary moved onto nearby farmland that Bert purchased in the Cardale area. They built a new house there in the mid 1950s and spent nearly 50 years happily farming their land. During that time, they had two children, Eleanor and Raymond. Mary spent many hours involved in her children’s activities.

In addition to being a busy farm wife and mother, Mary was very involved in community activities, such as the church at Cardale where she was a long-time choir member, the Cardale UCW, and the Rebekah Lodges in Oak River, Hamiota, and later in Brandon. This year marked her 75th year of belonging to the Rebekahs.

Mary loved being a grandmother to Krista and Cody and was always eager to babysit and attend special occasions, such as Christmas concerts, awards days, and of course birthdays. She was an avid sewer, and her grandchildren always looked forward to homemade Christmas pyjamas each Christmas Eve. Mary used leftover material from the family to make each grandchild a quilt when they moved away, so they could always feel close to home.

Bert and Mary enjoyed the opportunity to travel, visiting England, the Maritimes, the west coast and Las Vegas. Leaving the farm in 1997, they moved to Hamiota for three and a half years. In 2000, they moved into Brandon so they could be closer to their family. Sadly, Bert passed away on January 9, 2001.

Mary continued to reside in Brandon and was always busy. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, and socializing. Mary was an excellent baker and often had fresh treats for any visitors. She looked forward to coffee mornings, cards, attending meetings, volunteering, and family suppers.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Bert; son Raymond; siblings Winnie (Tom) Yorke, William Longstaff, Doug (Mildred) (Ruby) Longstaff, Charlie (Pauline) (Amy) Longstaff, Rowland Longstaff; her nephew Bruce Longstaff; niece-in-law Charlotte Yorke; and nephews-in-law Stan Thickens and Clemm Larsen. A private celebration of life was held at Campbell Funeral Chapel in Hamiota on February 21, 2023, with interment held in the Hamiota cemetery with Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
