JOHN STOYKA
April 15, 1925 – March 27, 2023
Our father peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on March 27, 2023, at Misericordia Health Centre at the age of 97.
He is survived by his son Ron Stoyka (Jeanne), daughters, Sherron (Dean Carr) and Lynda (Chris Malloy), grandchildren, Edward Stoyka (Meghan), Chantal (Joey Either), Tara (Eric Meadwell), Samantha Carr, Kelly and Erin Malloy great-grandchildren, Jack, Chase, Kyle, and Theo, sister Esther Molnar of Calgary as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was born April 15, 1925 in Dauphin, MB to Wasyl and Mary Stoyka. John was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Velma (2003), brothers, Peter and Steve Stoyka, sisters, Lena Piotrowski, Ann McDonald and Tolly Riggs.
At the young age of 18 Dad joined the army on January 23, 1944 and fought on the front line with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He fought for ten months in action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and other places before being captured as a prisoner of war on March 30, 1945.
Dad worked for the City of Winnipeg License Branch for 30 years retiring May 18, 1980 and went into full mode of volunteer service. He kept in touch with other retirees who met for lunch once a month and was very well liked.
Our Dad had a great love for his family and had a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Above all he had a kind and generous soul wanting to help others in need.
The family is especially grateful for his neighbours Rick and Halina and family for checking in on Dad faithfully every day to make sure he was okay. This act of kindness aided our Dad to stay in his own house as long as he could to age 97. They have a special place in our family's hearts and our prayer would be that others living on their own could have neighbours such as these to love and care for them in this way.
Dad was a huge part of our everyday life and it will never be the same. He will be lovingly remembered and immensely missed. Until we meet again, Rest in Peace Dad. We love you forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Siloam Mission, Agape Table or Humane Society.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Calvary Temple, Buntain Chapel, 440 Hargrave St., April 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating. Reception to follow.

After marriage to Beverly Riggs I quickly became aware of her extended family Aunts-Uncles-cousins- Meeting Uncle John and having conversations over the years was always enjoyed, interesting, and informative. What ever time I had with him was always quality time- In the last few years our chats turned to memories and listening to him and hearing some of his life time stories was for me a great treat! He along with other well remembered family Aunts and Uncles shall always have a place in my memory. I was John's mailman for more years than I can even remember. He was positively the most kind caring and gentle soul I ever had the pleasure of meeting. And in my job I have met not just hundreds but possibly thousands. I will miss his warm smile and friendly greetings and conversations. My condolences to all his family and close friends. Grandpa was truly one of kind and I am so grateful to have had him in my life. He was always there for my sister and I. He would call us daily to check in, have countless breakfast/lunches/dinners together, run errands with us, come to all of Erins soccer games, garden, bake our favourites, cook our special lasagna, watch jet games, go fishing and visit each other every chance we could, talking about every topic there is. Grandpa was a heroic figure and a people person, everyone enjoyed being in his peaceful presence as he was always there to lend a helping hand. I’ve learnt so much from him and his legacy will live on in all our hearts forever. Now the room may no longer echo with his laughter, since he has moved into the mists of ever after. My sympathies to the Stoyka family. I met Your Dad at the R W R museum some 20 years ago and immediately became friends with him. Our friendship grew as we attended the Military Anniversaries in France and Vimy Ridge Park here in Winnipeg. He proudly served his country during the War and gave many talks to school children on his experiences during the war. He was a kind soul and a real gentleman. I will miss you and your stories.
