FRIEDA DODDS
Frieda passed peacefully on March 17, 2023, at the age of 98.
Born in Poland October 5, 1924, and came to Canada in 1949 with her son, parents and three siblings and settled in Winnipeg.
She was predeceased by her son Jurgen Lauber in 1989, her husband Jacob Dyck in 1994 and husband Leslie Dodds in 2010.
Surviving children, Edith Stewardson (Robin Barton) and Sigrid Quinn (David Warrenchuk), four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, sister Hermine Lauber, brother Gerhard Lauber, nieces and nephews and family in Germany from her oldest brother who did not immigrate to Canada, as well as Leslie Dodds’ family in Winnipeg and British Columbia.
Frieda was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross and lived in the Arms of the Cross since 1992. She enjoyed participating in social events at the Arms and it was there that she met Leslie Dodds and had a wonderful 14-year marriage. They enjoyed travelling in North America and visiting family in British Columbia.
She was a wonderful baker and seamstress. There were always homemade cookies in the house, and she kept her freezer stocked with apple pies and happily shared them. Out of necessity she learned to sew and sewed all her own clothing and that of her daughters and then many snow suits for her grandchildren. She could alter or fix almost any garment and was always happy to do that for people. As a single parent with minimum income, she maintained a good home for her daughters and tackled many projects around the house with determination and success. She showed them good work ethics and that women can be independent.
An endearing grandmother, she enjoyed her times with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Acknowledgement to WRHA home care program that provided services to Frieda that allowed her to remain in her apartment living independently until her move in 2019 to Thorvaldson Care Centre. She lived there comfortably for three years and was well cared for by the staff and enjoyed the company of the other residents, volunteers, and the activities they provided. Her last few months were in Beacon Hill Lodge where her care was delivered with kindness and respect.
Cremation has already taken place and a graveside ceremony will happen in the future.

It is with heavy hearts that we saw the passing of Freida. She was a beautiful person with a generous warm heart. We all immediately loved her when Uncle Les and Freida married. They were truly a wonderful couple. Freida always wore a happy smile on her face and Uncle Les had the twinkle in his eye. I remember when I shared with Freida how I worked with many deprived students who came to school with no hats, scarfs or mittens on cold days. Freida instantly knew what she wanted to do. So very many of those students ended up with beautifully knitted scarfs and mittens by Freida. I am sure she is up in Heaven, rejoicing with family and friends and wanting to make them happy. We think of Freida's kindness and love often and will forever hold her in our hearts. We send our love and sympathy to your family.
