VERA JEAN HAND

Vera Jean Hand (née Bowering) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 29, 1925, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (Betts) Bowering. After graduating from Cecil Rhodes High, she worked in the Winnipeg office of Trans Canada Airlines. She married Kenneth Allan Hand at St. George's Anglican Church in Winnipeg on August 24, 1951.
She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist where she served in many capacities. She was an accomplished and successful pastel artist, capturing the beauty of the prairie landscape which she loved so much. Her works are in many collections in Canada and internationally. The home she and Ken shared on the banks of the Red River allowed her opportunities to enjoy nature, bird watching, and gardening.
Vera could be elegant and eloquent when the situation required, but she could also be zany and goofy and loved to laugh.
In 2012 Vera moved to Vancouver to be closer to her children. The family is grateful for the care provided at Arbutus Long Term Care Home where she passed away peacefully on March 22, 2023.
Vera is survived by her two sons, Mark Kenneth (Paul Gravett) and Jeffrey Allan (Bonita Lewis), her grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan, and several nieces and nephews. Vera was predeceased by her husband, Ken, in May 1995, her sisters, Julie (Bowering) Barrie and Dorothy (Bowering) Keane, and her brothers Myron and Harold.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My late husband, Dr. Mark Buettner and Vera knew each other well. We have many of Vera's pastels proudly displayed in our home and he had several in his dental office. She painted one for us of a Crocus which is our provincial flower. The meaning behind it was "I saw a crocus pushing up last year's dead leaves and grass and I realized that I too have another chance at life." We visited her in her home and such a gracious woman. You looked after her so well. She had a wonderful life. She has earned her eternal rest. - Posted by: Joy Buettner (Friend/Client) on: Apr 02, 2023

  • Auntie ā€œVā€! I am so sorry to hear of your passing. I have many wonderful memories of conversations and laughter with you. You were always so interested, kind and caring. I still have that Chinese fortune telling set! I am also fortunate enough to have several of your beautiful pictures that I will treasure. I am so sad that we lost touch over the years, but grateful I did have you in my life. Rest In Peace. Condolences to Mark and Jeff and family. - Posted by: Meredith Delaloye (GOD Child) on: Apr 01, 2023
