MAURICE RUDICK
March 21, 1935 – March 26, 2023

Peacefully on March 26, 2023, Maurice Rudick passed away at Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg. Dad was predeceased by our mom, Shirley Mary Rudick (nee Lozinski), his parents, Gabriel and Anna Rudick, sisters, Stella Zajac, Olga Spik and Toni Slaney and brother Peter Rudick.
He is survived by his four children and five grandchildren: Cathy (Taras Zalusky) and Alena; Lisa (Peter Menge), Ryan and Nicholas; Wendy (Joe Leibfried), and Bob (Lynn Carson), Jack and Raina. He is also survived by many family, and close friends including niece Leslie Slaney (Peter Moodie).
Dad was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, raised in his early years on the family farm in Rosser, Manitoba. At age 12, he moved to Winnipeg with his family where he attended Gordon Bell High School and made many lifelong friends. Following graduation, Dad joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as an accountant, where he remained in different accounting roles throughout his career.
When he wasn't working, he and Mom were often cheering their children on at any number of dance recitals, hockey, ringette, baseball and basketball games. He was also a man of many hobbies, from woodworking, to gardening, to wine-making and he could fix almost anything. He taught his daughters to change a tire and he helped his son and daughter-in-law finish the basement of their first home.
Following his retirement in 1991 Dad became a master cook, where we all enjoyed many happy family dinners, birthdays, and holidays in his kitchen. With his children grown, he rekindled his own love of sports, joining the Charleswood Curling Club, golfing with family and friends and taking long walks around the neighbourhood or along the many trails found in and around the Winnipeg area. As a volunteer, Dad joined a wonderful group that made perogies to raise money for St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church. He also took up cheering on his grandchildren in their different endeavours, from hockey to theatre to band recitals and visiting those of us who had moved away. Family came first, he was always there for all of us.
Although this past year was a difficult one for Dad, we were able to connect with him often with tales from his past and to receive his many best wishes for all our futures. He may not be physically with us any longer, but he is with us in our hearts, and will always be cheering us on.
Our thanks go out to the caring staff at Fred Douglas Lodge. They treated Dad with dignity and did everything they could to make his final months as meaningful as possible.
A private ceremony in celebration of Dad's life will be held at a future date.
Donations in honour of him may be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My sympathy to all Moe and Shirley’s family. My late husband (Bev Jones) and I spent many moments chatting with your father when we all lived in Charleswood. He was so proud of you all and it was clear that family was so important to him. May your memories be a joy. Sincerely, Jan Jones (Dave’s mother) - Posted by: Jan Jones (Friend ) on: Apr 02, 2023

  • I volunteered with Moe to prepare perogies at St. Josephat's Parish and had pleasant conversations as we worked. Moe told me about growing up in a small farming town, his favorite dog, school, career, family, and sports. We told humorous stories and often laughed while doing our perogy chores. Moe worked positively, provided constructive advice, and assisted me. As a result, working with him was pleasant. I know he's in a good place now, and I wish the best to you Moe. - Posted by: Michael Weretyk (Friend) on: Apr 01, 2023

  • My sincere condolences to the family, especially Cathy with whom I had the pleasure of working. - Posted by: Normand Dupasquier (A former colleague of Cathy) on: Apr 01, 2023
