EVELYN ANNE JEMIMA ANDREWS

Evelyn Anne Jemima Andrews of Melita passed away at the Virden Health Centre on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the age of 97.

Evelyn was born in the RM of Arthur on April 24, 1925 and attended school in the area. In 1944, after the death of her mother Leila, she maintained the household for her father, Albert Edward Andrews, and brothers Brown and Donald.

Evelyn held the position of “Clerk to the Auctioneer'' at the Melita Auction Mart for 7 years before moving from the farm in Coulter to Melita in 1980. Evelyn then became the Bookkeeper at the Auction Mart until its closure in 1985. She continued to help out with bookkeeping in the local area: Melita and Area Arena, Melita Inn, Southwestern Manitoba Regional Library, and Melita Auto Body Shop. Evelyn officially retired in March 1995.

Music was an important part of Evelyn’s life. She took piano lessons and played the piano for Sunday School at Coulter United Church beginning in the 1940s and eventually as assistant for regular church services. From 1956-1980 Evelyn was pianist for church services at both Coulter and Coultervale churches, as well as working with the Junior and Senior Choirs until she moved to Melita in 1980. While living in Melita, she continued her active church involvement by working with the Junior Choir, singing with the Senior Choir and playing for many church services and funerals. In February 2020, at the age of 94, Evelyn played for her final funeral. She also enjoyed playing for the Melita School “Kids” choirs, the “Music Makers”, the Order of the Eastern Star (local and Grand Chapter), and many community events as requested. She was also involved with the Melita and area community theatre group performing in “Fiddler on the Roof” and “My Fair Lady”.

Evelyn enjoyed traveling to the Maritimes, Florida, Hawaii, Yukon, Alaska and Branson as well as vacationing many times at Clearwater Lake in Northern Manitoba and Little Bear Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Leila and Bert; her brothers, Brown (Wilma) and Donald (Hazel); and great-great-nephew, Hayden. “Auntie” will be dearly missed by her nieces and nephews: Beverly Andrews-Johnson (Rob), Ron Andrews (Diane), Barry Andrews (Lorie), Patsy Andrews-Vert (Ron) and her great-nephews and their families: Jason & Kayleigh (Emersyn, Hunter, Hudson), Scott & Daphne, Dustin & Maggie (Bo), and Ty.

Everyone is welcome to join the family on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at the Coultervale Cemetery, Coulter, MB. for the interment followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. from the Victoria United Church, Melita, MB. The Reverend Christopher Davis will officiate.
