MARY ZANEWICH

1916 - 2023

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our sister and aunt on March 24, 2023, at the age of 106.

Mary was born in Sclater, Manitoba to Anastasia (Nellie) and Fred Zanewich, the second of 12 children. She got her early education in Sclater, initially worked in the nearby area and then moved to Winnipeg where she spent most of her life.

Mary is survived by three sisters (Vicki Bronsdon of Burnaby, BC, Nel Shewchuk of Winnipeg and Joan McPhee of Dauphin, MB) and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, four sisters (Pearl Bezak, Anne Lewicki, Olga Watt and Dorothy Sotolov) and four brothers (Peter, Paul, Steve and Harry).

Mary was a kind and caring person with a big heart. Her pleasant approach and nice simile was welcomed by all. Many family members were helped by her including those coming to the city to adjust to a new life. She was a private person and kept her age to herself.

Mary, as with many of her day, had to cut her schooling short and go to work at an early age. Over the years she did mostly office work for many different businesses. Her working career ended with running the office at Miller Hatchery.

Mary was a survivor of breast cancer at the age of 62, notwithstanding the challenges of the harsh chemotherapy treatments of the day. She loved to visit with her sisters in rural Manitoba and help with work. The daily newspaper was read until her late age. Mary loved to do puzzles including the word jumble (which she submitted for the Free Press weekly prize). She loved to crochet and made many afghans, table cloths, etc. for family members and others. Over the years Mary made many trips within Canada and the USA, visiting family and friends.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of Extendicare Tuxedo Villa nursing home for their care to Mary in the latter years of her life.

Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred at a later date by the gravesite of her special aunt and uncle. Mary will be missed by her family.

Donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
