GERALDINE CORRIN BATES

(nee CALDER)

October 11, 1935 - March 18, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom Gerry at Oakview Place March 18, 2023.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Larry in 2015, and her son Jay in 1961. She is survived by her children, Laurie (Dave), David (Mary Ellen), and Lindy (Ross).

She was the only child of Morrison and Myrtle Calder. She was very close to her cousins, George, Ron and Grant growing up in the Point Douglas area. She married her high school sweetheart Larry in 1955 and they had Jay in 1958. The loss of Jay in 1961 was devastating to her and Larry, but they had an enormous amount of love to give and adopted their three children. Gerry was a great wife, mother and loving, caring grandmother to Matt (Amanda), Kathleen (Aaron), Naomi, Jay and Sarah; as well as a great-grandmother of five. Mom's life revolved around her family especially her grandkids. Mom was an avid animal lover and any lost or injured animals ended up at our home in Transcona to be cared for. Although Mom suffered from arthritis and chronic pain she never complained out loud and kept our home happy and full of love. She was the most loving, caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother we could ask for and we thank her for her dedication to family.

We would like to thank the staff at Homestead assisted living, Victoria General Hospital staff, as well as the nurses, care aides and staff at Oakview Place.

As per Mom's wishes she has been cremated and will be placed with her son Jay and husband Larry. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Arthritis Society or a charity of one's choice.

  • Laurie, David and Lindy...so sorry to hear of the loss of your mom. I know how hard it is to lose a parent. I always enjoyed chatting to your mom and was sorry to see her move away last year as one of the last original Kildare neighbours. I remember her sitting in her back yard and enjoying the birds that she attracted with her many feeders. - Posted by: Gwen McGimpsey (Longtime Neighbour) on: Apr 08, 2023
