Phyllis Lillian Gelhorn passed away with family by her side on March 27, 2023 at the age of 90.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward and son Bruce. Phyllis is survived by her son Lloyd, daughter Heather, daughter-in-law Elaine, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves three sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Hatton, Saskatchewan Phyllis moved to the farm at Dencross, Manitoba with her family of origin as a toddler. She met Edward during their Luther League days and they married in 1954. Phyllis had formal training as a secretary but her main roles were as a wife, mother and caregiver - roles which she excelled at. Qualities that we admired were her kindness, strength, sense of humour and always being able to make the best of a difficult situation.
Phyllis also enjoyed being physically active, travelling, crocheting, weaving, embroidery and music.
Phyllis was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church until its closing and volunteered wherever there was a need.
The family would like to thank Veronica for providing kind, compassionate caregivers especially Emily who was a comfort to Phyllis for many years.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Lowe presiding.
Masks will be mandatory.
If friends so desire donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2K 0X3.

Greetings in our Risen Lord, Norma, Lloyd, Heather and all the family and friends of the late Phyllis Gelhorn (nee Rueb) Esther and I are sorry to hear of the untimely passing of your beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Phyllis this past March 27. Please accept our belated written condolences. As the Brazilian liberation theologian, Leonardo Boff, wrote in his Way of the Cross- Way of Justice, "Human beings are not born to die; they die to be resurrected." (Orbis Books: Maryknoll, NY, 1980; p. 122) May God bless Phyllis for the good things she has done, forgive her sins and grant her repose with the just. May Phyllis rest in peace and may God grant her memory to be eternal! May what is offered be holy, and may what is broken be healed. Please know that we have added Phyllis to our prayers for the reposed as we continue to pray for you and your family. Please pray for us. We have fond memories of Phyllis’ gentle presence, her good humour and her faithful dedication to the Lord and her family, immediate, extended, church and community. I personally cannot think of a time I didn't know her, as she was a most faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church which I attended all my life and some of my earliest church memories are of her and her beloved late husband, Edward. I will always associate her with the Bethel Bible Series which provided us all with “gems for daily living”. I’m also most grateful to Phyllis for the recipe for Scripture Cake that she shared in the Christ Lutheran Church’s newsletter in ca. 1980 when she served as Secretary. I have baked this fruit cake made with ingredients found in the Bible and we have enjoyed it a number of times. I will continue to bake it in Phyllis' memory from now on. Lloyd & Heather, May the peace of the Lord be with you. We have many fond memories, the farm, sing-alongs in the car, Sundays at the beach and many other times. We are so glad that she is no longer suffering and has Ed & Bruce. - Posted by: Kathy & Linda Deibert sisters (family friends) on: Apr 08, 2023
