MONICA MARGARET GAMBLE
On Sunday, April 9, 2023, Monica Gamble of Winnipeg passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, at Victoria Hospital at the age of 90. Monica was born in Swan River, MB, on January 21, 1933, to the late James Murray Hogg and Dorothy Linda (Duggleby).
Monica is survived by two sons, Richard (Connie) and Glenn (Kerry) Gamble; two grandsons, RJ and Rob Gamble; niece Kathy (Barry) and nephew Donald (Kathy) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, mostly in the Swan River area. She was predeceased by husband Richard (Dick) Gamble, sister Betty Brandson and brother Bruce Hogg.
Monica started her early life on a farm in Swan River, attending the Big Woody Schoolhouse. Her family lived several miles from the school so winter transport involved horse and sleigh. She experienced rural life on a northern Manitoba farm in the late 1930s. The family farm mainly produced grain, lumber and livestock/poultry. Searching for a different adventure, at 16 she travelled to Winnipeg to attend Business School. She worked in several offices in a secretarial role before eventually working for the Province of Manitoba, retiring in the 1980s. After retirement, she kept herself busy working at many different office temp jobs. When her son Glenn and his business partner Brian Campbell started Ultimate Auto in 1993, she was asked to help get their accounting set up. She agreed to get them started, saying they could take over after three months. She ended up staying for 22 years, retiring for a second time in February of 2015. She was always considered their secret weapon in the growth of the business.
In June of 1954 she married Dick Gamble; they had a great loving partnership in their marriage. They enjoyed early trailer trips with their sons, and many trips together, including wintering many years in Florida. They also spent a lot of time returning to Swan River to enjoy family. Their marriage lasted 42 years till Dick’s passing in June of 1996. Monica loved spending time with her two grandsons, RJ and Rob and was always very proud of their many successes and achievements.
The family would like to acknowledge Monica’s very close friend Laura Isbister. After Dick died, Monica and Laura did a lot of travelling together, making many wonderful memories. Later in Monica’s life Laura was always there to help her. The family very much appreciates the friendship and kindness Laura showed Monica over many years.
For the last 10 years Monica has enjoyed living at the Parkway. She made numerous friends and always enjoyed participating in the various activities.
The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital in both Urgent Care and the 5th floor for their extraordinary care and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at Thomson “In the Park”, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Private family interment will be at a later date.
