KENNETH KATZ
With great sadness, we announce the passing, peacefully and surrounded by family, of Kenneth Katz, 91, of Winnipeg. Beloved husband of 64 years of Sheila Beryl Katz (Bay), father and father-in-law of Brian (Lisa Kaplan), Marty (Laura Trachuk) and Barry (Nikki née McCloy), devoted grandfather of Maya, Sophie, Noa (Em McRobert), Sacha, Mackenzie and Ethan, and great-grandfather of Frances.
Kenny was born in Winnipeg’s North End on July 2nd (or 3rd – the family continues to debate his precise date of birth) to parents Philip and Ida Katz (née Barak) originally of Cholojow, Galicia (now Ukraine). Educated at St. John’s Tech and the University of Winnipeg Collegiate, Ken spent two cringe-inducing years in pre-med studies at University of Manitoba before joining the family business, West End Upholsterers, on Portage Avenue. He worked with his father and mother to build the company to be a significant force in commercial drapery, carpeting and upholstery in Canada and the US.
While none of their sons would eventually enter the family business, he was immensely proud that he and Sheila were parents to two chartered accountants and a lawyer. He enjoyed visiting their sons and their families in Toronto, Vancouver and elsewhere.
Services will be held graveside at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery in Winnipeg on Tuesday April 25, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., with reception to follow at the Winnipeg Squash Racket Club.
Shiva services will be held on April 25, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at PH3 – 365 Wellington Crescent.
Memorial donations may be made to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
The family thanks the nurses and staff at Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

My condolences to Aunty Sheila and the rest of his family. Always Uncle Kenny to me, Kenny was a great friend to my father Norman Shore. I had the pleasure, many times, joining both Kenny and Norman out for a men's lunch. Before the pandemic , when I was last able to see Kenny, we went out for burgers because they both, he and Norman, had coupons. It was always a great day when we could go in one of Kenny's cars. Kenny always had a good word for me, and was always entertaining with his great sense of humour. Again, my condolences on your loss. - Posted by: Philip Shore (Family friend ) on: May 27, 2023

Sheila, I can not believe that Kenny is gone. I said to Jack tonight that I have had no jokes from Kenny, so I went on line to give you a call. When I typed in your name, Kenny’s obit came up. We are so very sorry and sad. - Posted by: Lyn and Jack Murta (Friends) on: May 02, 2023
