Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryYVONNE VAN WALLEGHEM
With sadness we announce that our beloved mother, Yvonne Angele Van Walleghem, passed away peacefully on April 18, with family by her side. Yvonne was born in Winnipeg, an only child to Modeste and Marie Persons (Gorge). She was predeceased by her husband, Julien, in 1961.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, John (Pat) and Brian (Marilyn), her grandchildren, Maria, Keith, Benjamin and Louis, and her great-grandchildren, Julian, Brynja, and Ava.
Her educational years were mostly spent at St. Mary's Academy. She always treasured that connection and the friends she made. She worked part-time in the small grocery store run by her parents. After graduation she worked several years at Eaton's department store. She married Julien on April 22, 1948. Later she was a stay-at-home mom devoted to her boys' upbringing. As they aged, she worked various part-time jobs.
She was a long-time, involved parishioner at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. She enjoyed volunteer work, helping at St. Mary's Academy and Family Centre of Winnipeg and coordinating Neighbourhood Watch on her block. Her most satisfying volunteer work included organizing and supporting the Darjeeling Club, raising money for the work of her brother-in-law, Fr. Gerard Van Walleghem, and other Jesuits in Darjeeling, India. She was also a member of the founding board and secretary of L'Arche Winnipeg for several years.
She was notably upbeat and friendly, making, maintaining and enjoying many friendships over the years. Her greatest joy however was her family. She was proud of her boys and their families. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She enjoyed attending school and sport activities in Brandon and Winnipeg and was thrilled to see them grown, happy and making families of their own.
Mom and our family appreciated the home care workers (who became friends), other caregivers and Dr. Sheila Domke whose special care kept her well for all of the above activities. Thanks also to friends and family for their support, visits and well wishes.
Cremation has occurred and a memorial Mass and private interment will occur at a later date.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. You might consider L'Arche Winnipeg or Canadian Jesuits International.

My sincerest condolences to all Mrs. van Walleghem's family. She was always "Mrs. van Walleghem" to me. A lovely, kind-hearted woman who always seemed to have a smile on her face. Mrs. van Walleghem was a wonderful friend to my mother for many, many years and I know my mother cherished that friendship. May God's healing hand be upon all of you. SIncerely, Scott Elsey - Posted by: Scott Elsey (Family friend) on: May 01, 2023

We are saddened to hear of Yvonne’s death and send our condolences to her family. Our daughter and baby granddaughter moved into the house next door to Yvonne’s several years ago. Yvonne was a wonderfully kind and caring neighbour always offering to help our daughter, who was a single mother, in any way she could. We lived out of town and so knowing Yvonne was next door was very reassuring. Our daughter and granddaughter moved to a different home a few years later but always remembered Yvonne with warm memories. May her memory be a blessing to her family. - Posted by: Deb and Vic Thordarson (Acquaintances) on: May 01, 2023
