Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I am so sorry to learn of Harvey’s passing. My thoughts and prayers to his dearly loved children and grandchildren. I first met Harvey as a petroleum geologist at the Province of Manitoba in 1984. Upon meeting me, he offered to take me for lunch with his lovely wife Margaret. I’ll never forget that kind gesture to a young, female geologist just starting out in my career. We instantly connected as colleagues. Harvey was a fountain of knowledge of Manitoba sedimentary geology and the petroleum industry. He championed me throughout my career and was a great mentor and friend. Harvey co-authored a few technical papers with me, along with another dear colleague and friend who has also sadly passed away, Julie LeFever at the North Dakota Geological Survey. Harvey often joked that Julie and I roped him into yet “another paper”, but always accepted in the end and made a valuable contribution. We had many great collaborations and lots of fun working together to accomplish them. He and Margaret grew into cherished friends over the years and we had many wonderful visits over lunch and dinner, swapping travel stories, discussing world events, always with a good dose of laughter. Harvey and Margaret were honoured guests at my retirement in 2017. They made the trip to Winnipeg from Brandon to attend. I was so touched. Sadly, we lost Margaret a few short months later. I will miss Harvey’s dry sense of humour, his generosity, respectfulness and interesting conversations. Harvey was a true gentleman. He was kind, honest, humble, caring and an excellent geologist. Harvey dearly loved Margaret and their children and spoke of them often with reverence and pride. They were the centre of his life. I am blessed to have known Harvey and am grateful to him as a friend and colleague. Harvey is now with his dear Margaret. God bless you both. Thank you for your friendship. My prayers to you and your family. Carol Martiniuk - Posted by: Carol Martiniuk (Colleague/friend) on: Jun 30, 2023

  • I would like to share a couple of stories with you. If you receive this, please send me an e-mail -- if you are interested. You don't need me to tell you that you had the most wonderful parents anyone could wish for! I'm shocked to know of Harvey's passing; he just seemed to always 'be there'. Sincere condolences, Joan - Posted by: Joan Garnett , Wakefield, Quebec (Old, but close, friend to Norma Walmsley and myself.) on: May 20, 2023

  • I am one of the many geologists who were fortunate enough to have Harvey as a professor. His enthusiasm for the study of geology, his ability to convey that information in a way that allowed us to learn about and appreciate the Earth, and his kindness will all stay with me. At a time when there were few women studying and working in geological fields, Harvey conveyed nothing but confidence in all of his students. He sincerely cared about everyone and expected the best from each of us. He will be missed very much. - Posted by: Valerie Edwards (Former geology student) on: May 19, 2023

  • I am one Geology student of thousands that attended Brandon University who honored, respected and flourished under the tutorial of Professor Harvey Young. He made time for every student to make sure they were successful and engaged in achieving a major or minor in Geology. Harvey made sure he kept contact after graduation with many (if not all) of Geology Graduates. My condolences to Susan and Family. You have so many cherished memories to celebrate. Hold and share all of you Dad’s accomplishments with your family and friends. Sincerely Dale Peake. I remember you Susan as having lots of laughs together and how you loved to discuss/debate different schemes of “how” to get out of certain assignments you had no interest in completing. You were a great student to have in one’s classroom. - Posted by: Dale Peake (Past student and Grade school teacher to daughter Susan) on: May 16, 2023
