NESTOR LAWRENCE BUDYK
Born: Apr 28, 1952
Date of Passing: May 15, 2023
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNESTOR LAWRENCE BUDYK
Nestor passed away on Monday, May 15 from complications of melanoma. He was a gentle quiet man who cared deeply and lived passionately. And he was loved by many for his willingness to help and most importantly his good work.
Nestor had a remarkable character of kindness, tolerance and generosity. Loving numbers, he began his career as an accountant. His zeal for real estate investment led to the formation of Lavro Properties which he nurtured and grew for decades. He also loved music, particularly playing the accordion. Having a great ear and a facility with the instrument that was uncanny, he would play with ease and enrich all our lives in concerts and for family and friends.
Nestor was always ready to help and a ray of light in the Ukrainian community. He generously supported everything Ukrainian; most recently a founding member of CFHU, an organization whose mission it is to develop hockey and youth hockey programs in Ukraine. He lived and died wearing a tryzub (trident) and a cross on his chest which clearly speaks to what he respected and valued.
Nestor was born in Winnipeg to Katherine and Walter Budyk. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.). Nestor married Alexis Kochan and together they created a wonderful life of ideas and business working hand in hand. He leaves Alexis to remember him with gratitude and love as well as three brothers, John (Orysia), Garry (Deanna), Ken (Shauna) and their children, Matthew, Leah, Rebecca, Andrew, Justin and their families; his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Tom Bryk with daughters, Nykola and Nina and their families; his father-in-law Jerry Kochan, as well as family and friends near and far.
Nestor leaves a remarkable legacy to carry on his desire to enrich the Ukrainian community and beyond. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Nestor’s name to the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 35 Marcie St.

It’s been a few weeks now since my dear friend Nestor passed on. I am still in shock and deeply mourning the passing of such a kind, compassionate and generous friend. I have so many wonderful memories of Nestor that it is hard to keep tears away when thinking of him. Not long ago he beautifully played his accordion at my birthday party. It was the best gift by far. Вічная пам’ять - Posted by: Alan Stewart (Life long friend) on: Jun 03, 2023

Many condolences to the family of Nestor Budyk and especially Alexis Kochan, his loving partner. I didn't know Nestor personally, but I'm a great fan and friend of Alexis and her amazing Ukrainian musical career and songs. Hope the music will carry you through this time of bereavement, Alexis, and may you be surrounded by the large circle of many friends you have gathered over the years. Best wishes, Di Brandt - Posted by: Di Brandt (Friend of Alexis') on: Jun 01, 2023

Nestor was a gentle, peaceful soul with many talents. He and his loving wife, Alexis, had such a mutually supportive relationship, especially musically. This is an incredibly difficult time. No mere human words can respond to this. But now, Alexis, your beloved husband now is with Christ more than ever before; he loves you more than ever before; and he is praying for you more than ever before, because our God is the God of the Living. As one Orthodox priest has said, "May what is offered be holy, and may what is broken be healed." And as Brazilian theologian, Leonardo Boff wrote, "We are not born to die; we die to be resurrected!" [Way of the Cross - Way of Justice. (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 1980.) p.122.] May Nestor rest in God's Eternal Memory! - Posted by: Esther Juce (Friend of the Kochan Family) on: May 28, 2023

To the entire Budyk extended family: I am so very sorry to hear of this. I will always remember Nestor as a kind, funny, and decent person with a heck of a lot of musical talent. I'd not seen him for many years, but I'm pretty sure those aspects of his character only grew richer as he grew older. Much love to all of you. - Posted by: Jerry Iwanus (friend of the family) on: May 18, 2023

Although several years older than me, Nestor and I crossed paths many times here in Winnipeg. Whether as students at the University of Manitoba and members of the Ukrainian Students' Club, as alumni members of the Rusalka Dancers at the UNF Hall, as teammates on the Old Hutsuls' sponge hockey team on city outdoor rinks, or as dedicated Ukrainian community activists, Nestor's lowkey and friendly demeanor was always present in all our encounters. The many contributions to the well being and quality of life by helping others made by Nestor will always be very much appreciated and remembered! May he rest in peace with God now and may his memory be eternal. Вічная й благая пам'ять йому! Нехай наш дорогий брат у Христі Нестор спочиває з Богом тепер. - Posted by: Taras Maluzynsky (friend) on: May 18, 2023

Got to know Nestor in the early 90’s through his interest in Volvo automobiles. Found him to be a fascinating, intuitive individual. We had many long conversations over the few years we had contact, our shared passion in music a common denominator. Best wishes to his family, so important in his life. - Posted by: Dean Wilson (Friend ) on: May 18, 2023
