LOUISE GILLIS
Katherine Louise Gillis passed quietly into the presence of the Lord on Friday, February 24, 2023.
She was born to Peter and Elma Rempel. A happy child, she came up with many unique expressions to describe the world as she saw it. You knew she was having a good time when she had a big smile on her face. A serious childhood illness diminished the smile a little and weakened her, but she developed a strong faith and quiet strength that sustained her in life.
Louise loved to travel. A short stint working in the office of a missionary radio station in San Juan, Puerto Rico helped put the travel bug in her. Later, she and her husband, Frank Gillis, as well as riding through life together, took many road trips through much of the US and Canada. However, it was always good to come home and spend quiet times with family and friends at the cottage in Lake of the Woods.
Louise loved to entertain. She and Frank hosted many family dinners, church and mission related events and shareholders’ meeting both at the lake and at their home in Winnipeg. She had a generous heart even at a young age. As a child, she ran home and emptied her piggy bank when she was made aware by her uncle that another child might not go to camp due to lack of funds. She herself never went. On all fronts, Louise was our family’s’ biggest supporter and we remain forever grateful for it.
Like many in her family, Louise was gifted with a beautiful, clear soprano voice, was accepted into the Winnipeg Philharmonic choir and sang in church choirs for many years.
Louise was predeceased by her husband, Frank Gillis; her parents, Peter and Elma (Brandt) Rempel and an infant brother. She is remembered with love by her sister, Arlene Rempel; one aunt, Louise Rempel; cousins from the Rempel and Brandt families; nieces and nephews from the Gillis family and friends.
Thank you to the health care professionals who cared for Louise during her many hospital stays, as well as the years of care given to her by doctors, Cameron Lowden, Stephen Wong, Beth Salamon and Sheila Domke. As well, thank you to the private home care personnel whose dedication went far beyond our expectations. In turn, it seemed that all who came in contact with Louise appreciated her for her gentleness and her uncomplaining nature. To family, friends and our Bethesda Church family, thank you for your compassionate care and support of both Louise and Arlene.
A service of remembrance for Louise Gillis will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethesda Church, 1350 Grant Avenue. If you are unable to attend, please join us at 1:45 p.m. via livestream at the following link: https://youtube.com/live/rpf6FV9JE1w?feature=share
