We remember our dear father, brother, grandfather and long-time northerner, Dan Marion, who passed away on May 12, 2022, at his home in Frank Channel, Behchoko, NT.
His family, friends and acquaintances will remember Dan as loving, kind-hearted, generous, hard-working, supportive, and devoted to his family and community.
Dan was born on November 16, 1945, in the small Manitoba community of Dufrost. At a young age, Dan showed his love for exploring. He would express this through his love of travel and adventure. This led him to the community of Behchoko, where he met the love of his life, Lena.
Dan Marion started his working career in Ontario and later in the Northwest Territories with the Hudson Bay Company. His will and adventurous spirit would have him continue a long, illustrious career. From his work with the Rae Edzo Dene Band, Mayor of the Community of Rae Edzo, to his entrepreneurial work with Rix Trucking to the President/COO of the Tlicho Investment Corporation. A shining moment was his appointment as the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.
Dan and Lena made their home in Rae, now Behchoko and later moved to Frank Channel. Dan wanted to move to the next chapter of his life to enjoy his love of gardening and reading. He was a voracious reader, and it linked him to a lifelong love of learning. Dan and Lena regularly hosted large family gatherings and always had an open-door policy.
He loved his home in Frank Channel, was a devoted husband and father to his children and grandchildren, and his little dogs were always beside him.
Dan is survived by his sons, Chris (Sherri) and Robert; daughters, Giselle, Deanna (Lance), and Joy-Ann (Georgie); grandchildren, Terance, Tyler, Jocelyn, Terrell, Jantanna, Roman; Romeo (Theresa) and the love of her life Lennox; great-grandchildren, Tyshawn, Tanner, Kaegan, Jaxon and Tayte.
He is survived by his brothers, Gilles (Rita), Herve (Germaine), Roland (Olga), Conrad (Carole), and Gabriel (Geraldine); sisters, Dianne, Marcelle and Lise; brothers-in-law, Maurice (Rita), John B (Bertha), Peter (Celine), Joe (Violet), Michael (Tina), Archie (Barb); sisters-in-law, Gina and Doreen.
Dan was predeceased by his wife Lena Zoe (January 23, 2022); his daughter Diane; his brothers, Richard Marion and Guay Marion; his parents, Renee and Philip Marion; his parents-in-law, Nick and Elizabeth Zoe; his brothers-in-law, Charlie Zoe and Leon Zoe.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. June 3, 2023, at St. Malo Parish, presided by Fr. Paul Nguyen.

Memories. You are a great and caring brother who accomplished so much. Your life was about helping, caring, sharing and giving to your family, your community and the aspirations of the north and their future. Your parents taught you well from your beginnings in your small rural southern community of Dufrost, Manitoba. You left us when you were young to start a career in the HBC in easternband western northern isolated communities. In my younger days, you brought me twice to remote northern communities and taught me much about our northern people. You were also curious in reading your volumes in books, biographies etc. It helped educate me and understand the aspirations of our indigenous people wanting be a strong voice in Canada and our last frontier. I attended your swearing in ceremony in Yellowknife, NWT in your appointment as Commissioner of the North West Territories. We are all proud of your accomplishments. I am equally happy of your family and extended family. Love to have you as a brother amongst many. You helped enrich my life . I am grateful.
