RONALD DOUGLAS FINCH

September 3, 1936 - May 17, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Finch, father, grandfather and friend. At the age of 86, Ronald passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. He leaves to mourn his special friend Marlene, his younger brother Raymond (Joy), his sister-in-law Lorraine. Ronald will forever be cherished by his children Retha-Lynn (Ken), Brian, Derrick (Ellen) and Melissa (Steve). Grandpa/Pop-pop will also be remembered by his precious grandchildren, Alexandra (Jory), Freyja, Everett, Clara and Jacob; as well as numerous other family members and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin Finch and Johanna Koper, as well as his brothers Jack and Gordon.

The eldest of four boys, Ron was born and raised in Morse Place, East Kildonan. As a young man, he joined Canada Customs where he worked for 35 years until his retirement in 1991. Dad loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time at the cottage, camping and sailing Lake Winnipeg. Over many years he ventured out on annual wilderness canoe trips with good friends, paddling numerous rivers and lakes across Manitoba and NW Ontario. In the early 90's, accompanied by his long time friend Dave Christie, Ron put his passion for woodworking to the test as they each endeavored to build their own cedar strip canoes. They created beautiful works of art that will be enjoyed and cherished by family for years to come.

Ron also enjoyed seeing the world, having the opportunity to travel across Canada, throughout the US, and overseas to England, Scotland, Ireland and Australia. Most memorably, he had the opportunity to take on exciting work assignments in Churchill, Manitoba and as far as Cyprus. Between teaching Tai Chi and producing homemade wine, Ron always kept busy with various projects and hobbies. As a very social person Ron had the gift of the gab and loved meeting people, conversing, and making new friends (a special trait passed on to his children). Ronald had a tremendous impact on others and touched the lives of many special people. We will dearly miss his smile, laughter, jokes and playful spirit. Paddle on Dad, enjoy the journey.

Special thanks to the 5th floor staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital for their excellent care and support, as well as Jennifer, his longtime Nurse Practitioner for her care and compassion. As per Ronald's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to make a donation to the Hull's Haven Border Collie Rescue (HHBCR).

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My condolences to Marlene and the rest of the family. Always enjoyed his company and sense of humour. We were part of a group that carried out a wilderness canoe trip for 3 or 4 days for many years. Great fun. Sorry that I could not attend the service. - Posted by: Wilf Schellenberg (Friend) on: Sep 23, 2023
