RONALD HERBERT STEVENS

1928 - 2023

It is with sadness that the family announce the death of Ron Stevens at Concordia Hospital, on May 31, 2023, at the age of 94 years. He will be lovingly remembered by Irene, his wife of 63 years, Judith, his daughter, and Chris (Leigh), his son, Etta (Josh), Skyla, Colton, his grandchildren, James, great grandchild, and Shirley Mikuska, his sister. Ron was predeceased by Alfred, his father, Mabel, his mother, Fred, Arthur (Linda), his brothers, and Frank Mikuska, his brother-in-law.

Ron was born on July 15, 1928, in the town of Birnie, Manitoba which is close to Riding Mountain National Park. Ron was only five years old and the oldest of four siblings when his father died. They were raised by their mother, Granny, and Grandad in Birnie.

Ron went to Normal School for teachers. He taught for a brief time before attending the University of Manitoba and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955. He worked as a journalist for the Winnipeg Tribune and the Canadian Press prior to teaching full time. He later completed his Master of Education and Master of Arts during the 1970’s.

He taught high school English at Teulon, Transcona and Miles MacDonnell Collegiates. He also worked for two and a half years at the Manitoba Department of Education promoting Canadian Literature and Middle Years programming.

In retirement, he pursued his passion for writing. His research into his Grandad’s tall tales, compelled him to write two creative nonfiction historical award-winning novels, Much Ado About Squat and Much More Ado About Squat, that took place between the 1880’s and early 1900’s when “pioneers by the thousands trekked westward over newly laid railway tracks to settle the vast wilderness of the Great Central Plain.”

Cremation has taken place. The celebration of Ron’s life will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray, Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5Y4. (204) 925-1120. The service will be live streamed. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, Ron would be pleased to know that it went to Fort Whyte Alive Nature Centre, one of his favourite places.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I always enjoyed my discussions with Ron about education. He was well read and loved his work. My best memory was fishing with a him at Wanjpigow.. We got stopped by the Conservation Officers and when they checked our lures it turns out one had the barb still not flattened. He received a $50.00 fine. But it became a fine day, full of puns from defining the moment to refining the wine. - Posted by: Simon Laplante (Married to his niece) on: Jun 11, 2023

  • A student of Ron’s at Transcona Collegiate. He was an excellent teacher of literature, and truly involved. Wilson and I were pleased to meet him just as his first novel was published. A rollicking family history we both enjoyed. We knew he planned a followup and will read it with as much joy as the first provided. - Posted by: Wilma Hewitson Parasiuk (Student ) on: Jun 11, 2023

  • We were students of Mr. Stevens in Transcona in the late 50s and early 60s. We enjoyed Mr. Stevens as a teacher, and later in life, as an author. His books about his grandfather, pioneer life and homesteading were very enlightening and humorous. Rest in Peace! - Posted by: Wilson And Wilma ( Hewitson) Parasiuk (Students) on: Jun 11, 2023

  • One of the finest . So lucky and blessed to know Ron, Irene & family. So enjoyed our “old” neighbors here at Beresford lake. Such good memories. Ron was truly a gentleman. Our condolences to all of the family. - Posted by: John&Diana Bilewitch (Friend and neighbor ) on: Jun 10, 2023
