RENE MARCEL DESJARLAIS

With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Rene Marcel Desjarlais on June 14, 2023.

After suffering from a stroke in 2016 Rene was unable to work in a career that he loved and was passionate about as an ironworker welder. A lifetime member of the International Ironworkers Local 728 joining in July 1970 he was able to enjoy travel to many locations and forged lifelong friendships along the way. Rene’s craft will be evident on many projects, such as hydro dams in Manitoba, mining sites across Ontario, Saskatchewan and BC, Alaskan Pipeline in the Beaufort Sea, Nebraska Power Plant in Lincoln, St. Louis Casino, and Miller Park Baseball Stadium in Milwaukee and too many others to mention.

Rene’s talent and passion for hockey took him on many adventures around the world. Having played recreationally all his life, he enjoyed the camaraderie with the St. Laurent Voyageurs and Lundar Oldtimers. Sagkeeng Oldtimers is where he appreciated the opportunity to play with a team that toured Europe and across Canada.

Many thanks to the Interlake caregivers who were so kind in providing him with the help he needed to live at home for five years, and the staff at Foyer Valade where he had resided for two years.

Predeceased by his loving daughter Yvonne in 2011, Rene leaves behind his devoted wife Lina, son Guy and grandsons Marc, Ryan, Ian, and Vance. He will be missed by many family members and lifelong friends too numerous to mention.

A service and Celebration of Life for Rene will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Laurent Roman Catholic Church on Hwy 6.

Donations may be made on Rene’s behalf to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
