Dr. Robert James Hoeschen died peacefully in Victoria, BC on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
Lovingly remembered by his wife, Clare and sons, Bruce (Lesley) of Vancouver, BC; Michael of London, England; and John of Victoria, BC; brother Dr. Lawrence Hoeschen of Vancouver and grandchildren, Sarah (Laurence) of Vancouver, Adam of Vancouver, Ryan of Vancouver and Benjamin of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his eldest son Richard in 2002.
Born in Winnipeg on September 16, 1935, he attended St. Paul's High School and graduated from the University of Manitoba with an MD and MSc in 1959. He completed a residency in Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal which led to a Fellowship in Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. Bob returned to a rewarding academic career in Cardiology at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB and was active in both the Consultive and Acting Staff, as well as Program Director of the Post Graduate Training Program in the Department of Medicine. Two sabbatical-year leaves at the University of London, England and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston were enjoyed with his family plus an additional year at the University of Pittsburgh, PA as a clinical trainee in Biochemistry research.
Bob was a much loved husband and father who played and coached many sports in his free time.
A quarterback for his high school football team, a jazz aficionado from the age of 15 (he once declared that Duke Ellington got him through medical school) and one who played a humble game of golf especially when he retired, playing at many of Victoria's golf courses. He met his wife Clare in the middle of West Hawk Lake, Manitoba, both age 15 and they were happily married for 64 years.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Uplands Golf Club, Cadboro Bay Road, Victoria, on Saturday June 24 at 2:00 p.m. Fond memories or amusing anecdotes may be emailed to Johnhoe@shaw.ca and will be shared at the celebration.
