CLAUDE JEAN MARTEL

June 28, 1948 – June 21, 2023

Very peacefully, surrounded by love, Claude left us after losing his battle with leukemia. Claude is survived by his partner Angie Carfrae; his children Celine and Julien (Kenzie); his sisters Paulette, Roselyne (Roger), Francine, Suzanne (Claude), Monique, Lucie (Serge), Carole (Bob), Marina and Denise; his brothers Gilles (Monique), Michel, Eugene, and Charles (Diane); his sisters-in-law Belinda (Kevin) and Rachael (David); and his brother-in-law Steven. Also saddened by Claude’s passing are many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Claude had a huge impact on the lives of his nieces and nephews, as evidenced by the number of visitors he had in the last few weeks. Claude was predeceased by his parents, Odile, and Bernard Martel.

Claude was born in Swan Lake, MB and grew up on the family farm in St-Leon where he learned the importance of hard work, fix-it-yourself skills, and how to stretch a dollar. He moved to Winnipeg once he completed high school but retained his passion for farming throughout his life. Even in the last few weeks, he would perk up when any of his visitors mentioned farm equipment or how the crops are looking.

Claude had a Business Administration diploma from Red River Community College and spent his entire career working for the same company, until his retirement from AFGD. With his gift for gab, he was a great salesman and made many friends while travelling through Saskatchewan and Manitoba selling glass to window manufacturers. He retired from the glass business in 2005 and returned to farming for many years, until renting his land to some of his nephews a few years ago, so that he could “retire”.

Claude, a great story-teller, was always ready to joke with anyone who would listen. He loved to travel and chat with the locals, whether he was in Florida, Arizona, Mexico or China. He went on many family vacations, one of his favourites being the entire summer in Europe with Angie and the kids. He enjoyed camping, golfing and helping family and friends with home projects. In the winter he curled several times a week at the St. Vital and Fort Rouge Curling Clubs.

The family would like to thank Cancer Care Manitoba for all of their compassion and care over the last 18 months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.

A Celebration of Life will be held on what would have been Claude’s 75 birthday, Wednesday, June 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Norwood Hotel.
