ALICE SMYTHE

1927 - 2023

Alice Smythe, born in Dunrea, MB., March 2, 1927.

Predeceased by parents, Herman J. Parent and Helena (Carney) Parent in 1979, son Michael Smythe, sisters, Vivian Desaulniers and Therese Dolyny in 2003 and brothers, Charles Parent, Arthur in 1994 and Norbert in 2015.

Surviving, two wonderful sons, John William (Bill) and Edward of Winnipeg, granddaughter Amanda Maxwell, brother Richard and sisters, Lorraine Benisz and Denise McKenzie.

Alice’s sons and granddaughter were her pride and joy and she enjoyed cooking and baking for family get togethers. She also spent many hours in her yard and flower gardens. Sewing was a lifetime pleasure and there were never enough hours for that and countless crafts, as well as two years learning from a very dear friend how to do watercolour painting. Most of all, after retiring at age 62, she spent the next 30 plus years minus 2, making hundreds of quilts (some hand quilted, most machine-quilted by experts) which she gave to family, friends and relatives, as well as six donated for auction to MB Crafts Museum, the Dugald Museum, Misericordia Hospital and Foyer Valade. As a member of Manitoba Prairie Quilters, she made and donated countless baby quilts for the ABC project. In later years made hundreds of lap-tops for quilts finished by The Alzheimer Society ladies. She said she was “never bored!” Her health began to fail her in her 92nd year, at which time she said “I decided to retire”, but nevertheless continued to keep as busy as it was possible.

In her earlier years, Alice was employed at St. Boniface Hospital, at the RCAF base in Marville, France, at the Department of Defense Production in Ottawa, at Investors Syndicate and Great West Life and finally, as a Real Estate agent in Winnipeg. After retirement she became a prolific quilter, watercolour painter and spent years making lap-tops for The Alzheimer Society.

Grateful to everyone who shared, participated in, contributed to, or otherwise enhanced what she considered to be a long, full, varied and greatly interesting terrestrial sojourn!

Special thank you to the staff on the third floor of Foyer Valde Personal Care Home for their love, care, professionalism and compassion.

In honouring Alice’s wishes, there will be no public service. A later informal “graveside interment” will be held at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.

  • I met Alice through quilting. She made many, perhaps hundreds, of quilts and quilt tops for the Alzheimer's memory quilt project. Very sorry for your loss, she was a wonderful lady. - Posted by: Patricia Myron (Alzheimer quilts) on: Jul 08, 2023
